Right now in my Kahr CM40 I have some Triton 135gr JHP. These average 1260 fps from the CM40 over my Chronograph and the expansion is pretty good with minimal fragmenting, but there is still some. 475 ft-lbs from a 3" bbl isn't too shabby. The 135gr isn't really my favorite, but for now, I'm giving it a try.

The same day I chrongraphed the 135gr Tritons I also ran some factory Speer 180gr Gold Dots. They average 990 fps from the CM40. What's interesting is, well to me at least, is that previously I had shot the same Gold Dots through my G27 and it averaged around 945-950 fps. So when the Kahr posted up 990, I grabbed my G27 and put a few more through it and sure enough, even though the G27 has about .5" longer barrel, it consistently averages about 50 fps slower than the shorter barreled Kahr. Oh well!

Barrels can have tighter or less tight chambers.
Where a 4" barrel can sometimes produce velocities greater than a 5".
IMHO - only a chronograph with a specific gun and load can tell the real story.

          Speer's hot 155 gr bonded GDHP has been chronographed from a MK40 at 1,150 fps @ 450 E.
But they kick hard and follow up shots aren't quick for me.
My MK40 loves 180s. Soft shooting, fast back on target and groups really well.
I've since switched to Speer GDHP Short Barrel 180s in my MK40.

But my favored round in 40 S&W from a service sized 4" barrel pistol (HK P30)?
          165 gr - Winchester Ranger T-Series or Federal HST (~1,130/40 fps @ ~468/478 E)

Barth, yes the 165gr Ranger T is one of my favorites too. I'm kinda diggin' the HST series as well.

9mm Remington Golden Saber 124gr JHP these just beat out the Gold Dots in my K9 for accuracy. All my other 9mm's carry Gold Dot 124gr based on the best accuracy.

Speer Gold Dot + P in my Kahr and LCR. I trust Speer and honestly won't buy anything else.

Ill never use Horndy Critical Defense. Not made for punching through walls and glass. Go to their website clearly states won't penetrate doors or walls..

I don't carry them either, but a Hornady Critical Defense will pass right thru your entire house most likely, as will most any handgun round...dunno that I'd volunteer to be the human ballistics gel on the other side of a wall.

Critical Duty is the new and improved round from Hornady. Only round to pass the various FBI barrier tests. Most of the tests on the 'tube' are pretty impressive. I've moved to it as my carry round along w/ the Winchester PDX1.
