  • MagTech Defensive Ammo

Has anyone tried the MagTech defensive ammo? I've found inexpensive JHP ammo at my local FleetFarm - 50 round box for around the same price as a 20 round box of Critical Defense - and I picked up a few boxes of my favorite calibers.

So far I have not found any reviews of this ammo.

In my Kahrs on the days I tried them the MagTech ammo seemed to shoot accurately. I'm not sure how the terminal ballistics play out.

    MagTech 380 Auto 95gr. JHP

Fed and fired reliably in my Kahr CW380. This test was done after shooting 70 rounds of practice ammo (some WWB, some reloads). A ShootingChrony at 10 feet said the average velocity was 871 feet per second and the extreme spread was 60. Apologies for using a 50 foot target at 25 yards. I ran out of 25 yard targets.

I tried the same ammo in a Taurus PT 738 TCP. This test was done after shooting 30 rounds of reloads. The same ShootingChrony at 10 feet was used to collect velocities. Average was 875 Feet per second and the extreme spread was 37. There was one failure to feed.

I've not used any Magtech ammo and not stayed at a Holiday Inn lately.

I have talked to several shooters in my area that say they shoot it and consider it great defense ammo. There must be some reviews somewhere on line. Looks like it works good in your gun(s).

Magtech First Defense 165gr. 45acp is one brand I will never purchase again.

This is the solid copper HP round. On paper it looks good, but this is the only ammo that rendered a pistol almost unusable. The rounds were too long and locked up the slide slightly out of battery but unable to cycle. Bad batch? Probably. But it left a very bad taste in my mouth for the brand.
Judging by today's left wing, looks like Senator Joe McCarthy was right after all.

I think any defensive ammo needs to be tested before carry. With one Fail to Feed in the TCP I'll probably stick to HydraShocks.

I like to see extensive reviews to know the ammo has a good reputation and how things expand. in the absence of good information I will post what I've learned so far. I have some chronograph data for .40S&W using a CM40 I could add to this thread if people are interested.

            Very wise decision and advice.

I was able to get 9mm Speer Lawman very inexpensively at GT Distributors (a supply store and etc. for cops) here in Austin.

              It was excellent ammo.
