Some more how do you practice

We practice something like it, finding cover while drawing from concealed carry. We're lucky that we belong to a club that has separate bays with different types of props

Yes, that Diane Sawyer piece was a tragedy.

I used to belong to a club where you had to shoot from fixed distances behind a bench and they got on you if you shot quickly. No movement allowed.
Finally was able to join another club a few years ago with bays where you can shoot 180 degrees and set up whatever you want. One can think they are a good shooter when they are firing from stationary positions but they really need to practice moving. Most of my ccw drills involve movement.

For people who don't have access to something like that I would suggest that they join IDPA and shoot those matches.
