  • Travel to Texas, CCW questions

For you Lone Star residents. I'll be visiting Texas soon and hope to
bring my EDC. It will be my first time air traveling with a weapon.
Anything unique about Texas law I should know to keep me out of trouble?
Also, any decent public ranges in the Austin area? Trying to get my daughter to consider a CCW.
    Thanks

Is your current CCW recognized in Texas?

The NRA website has some good info on state gun laws. You're wise to check before you traveled.

Where are you coming from? http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/adminis.../chlsindex.htm

That will allow you to look up our laws. If you have questions I'll be around.

        Thanks for the reply's.
I have a Florida and CT CCW. I know that Florida is reciprocal with TX.
I've spent enough time in Texas to know that there's the right way, there's the wrong way, and there's the Texas way. Just don't want to run afoul
with any strange state rules like having to have your gun on the left side
on Sundays and Thursdays, and no JHPs during Lent, July 4th and Hanukkah.

          Don't carry...
in bars or liquor stores or where you see a 51% sign
in schools or at school events
at sporting events (football, basketball, baseball, etc)
in places displaying a valid 30.06 sign (http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/adminis...ignposting.htm)

In case of traffic stop: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/adminis...s/chl/stop.htm

Do's and Don'ts via Texas DPS site: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/adminis...hl/chlfaqs.htm

I think just getting there will be the big challenge. If you get past TSA your home free.

Hey, thanks for that. Do you actually see many of those 30.06 signs around? I realize it's Austin... but it IS in Texas, isn't it?

Liquor stores are ok, none of them have on premises consumption. That is the kicker to the 51% rule. The place has to derive 51% or more of its gross income from the sale of alcohol for on premises consumption. Guess what unit we're doing in the academy yesterday and today. The 30.06 sign must be verbatim and must be correct size, colors etc. Around Dallas I see very few, Austin may be a little different, but no too much. I'd be interested in seeing how reciprocal licenses are handled at the state capital. We just put in an express lane for CHL holders, but have no idea how that would apply to visitors. The link I posted above will give you all the straight skinney on our laws.

I have yet to see an actual 30.06 sign, "in the wild", but I live in West Texas and we tend to have a little different view than those in Berkley East, I mean Austin.

As jlottmc pointed out, I should have said bars and places where you can buy a drink.

The other part of that is that they must derive more than 51% of their gross income from the sale of alcohol. Chili's and such do not meet that requirement. Also when you walk in the 7-11 notice the verbiage on the sign there, it says UNLICENSED, which means exactly what you think it does. CHL's or whatever your preferred abbreviation is, means you are good to go.

Thanks, I plan on looking in on it. I am surprised though at the scarcity
of public ranges though. This IS Texas, right?

You know, it is scary. What do you do if you are legally transporting a firearm, get a lay over and have to go to a hotel. Besides having your gun
locked, unloaded and ammo in a different place, what can you do to protect yourself from blue state B.S.

You ain't kidding, I have to drive almost an hour to get to the range.
