I know these are compact weapons but ive been thinking with the way the world is turning we might be put in a shtf situation while away from home and our compacts and subcompacts might be the only weapon we will have to get us home or to relocate to a safer place. With tht said normal self defense ranges might increase or your self defense gun might have to be pressed into service as a hunting tool. So what your max distance for accuratley shooting your kahr.

I do 9% of all my shootin at 7 yards and UNDER. I don't shoot really great, never did, so for me to getbaqck evenfurterh is a moot point and also more depressing.For some 7 yards and under is boring shooting to as they are very good shooters, so I see nuttin wrong with poppin some rounds at 25 yards for the experience of it to, but I would never train at that distance, especialy with a kahr.theire great and smooth trigger system is also for some a very TRYING trigger to get used to also. IMO kahrs are true hand shaken guns not target guns, certainly not distance guns, andI am speaking for ol jocko, YMMV.

We do have some super shooters on this forum ,who can shoot holes in a 7" pie plate at 25 yards,where as ol jocko can shoot 50 rounds at this late and still have no problem with any crumbs falling through any holes in the pie plate. People like guns are different..

I shoot my CW40 at 50yards sometimes and hit the 9in gong enough to be happy. Would I hunt with it at that distance??
In a SHTF situation, rather than starve, Yes. In any other (normal) situation, No.
I could not be absolutely sure of a humane shot with a Kahr defensive pistol at 50yrds. At half that (25yds) and a standing still target I could hit well 99% of the time.
Here's to the hope I don't ever have to prove that.

Oh! and I regularly bang the gong at 50yds with my Government size 1911s (off of sandbag rests) just for the fun of it. The 1911 though is a slightly different breed of cat...

7-15 yards is my Kill zone. Otherwise bring out the long guns....

Yes i fully agree that a karh is no hunting or long range gun but being that the majority of us purchased them as carry weapons they will be the most likely to be what we have on our person. That is i posed this question and thought it was worth mentioning to at least find out what our limitations are with our carry weapon. I have a ruger blackhawk in .41 mag and a .308 H&R but odds are i wont be carrying one of those come shtf. So i will have to make useof my .45 CW to protect and get me home or to amother safe location. If the sitation last long enough it might have to provide me with food or self defense at a longer range than 7 yds.

Over the years, with lots of shooting (it's fun) outdoors, indoors, doesn't matter, I just don't really get any better. I'm good up to about 25 yards on a consistent basis. Beyond that I'm probably better with a rock in my hands!

I just realized I asked everybody but I did not state distance for myself. I can consistently hit a pie plate out to 20 yds. After that its hit and miss accuracy, I sometimes hit the first one and sometimes not but almost always the second as I get to see how far off I am and can compensate. Although this is not a good tactic for real world use because there will be no large backstop to let you know to move to the right or left 1,2,3 or even 6 inches. I want to practice enough until I can get to 30yds which I feel will be max with the short barrel. Even if you get good out to 50yds or greater I wonder whether or not the velocity will even be high enough for it to do what it needs to do effectively. However this is just a mental excercise to get people to thinking outside the box of what capabilities they have with their kahr if pushed outside of the normal 7 yd defensive stat.

If nothing else it is a good experience to shoot your handgun at longer distances just to be familiar with what will happen. It will also be good for your hand/eye coordination and trigger control.

Yes, at 50 to 100 yards out your handgun still carries deadly power.

Just for example a slow going 45ACP 230gr at 850fps is still carrying 715 fps and +/- 261 ft.lbs of energy at 225 yards distance.

Now admittedly you would have to hold over your target around ten feet, but it still would be very deadly to whatever it hit.

I don't have the links but our SWAT guys get training annually from a guy who used to work for LA I believe. He gets consistent first shot hits with his 1911 out all the way to 150 and 200 yards.

I'd cry complete BS but I've seen it. He was actually on a TV show awhile back running against a competitive shooter in different challenges.

The competitive shooter beat him on like a draw and fire for speed, but got his clock cleaned on the other 8 or 9 challenges.

The guys good. Definitely not the norm.

Years ago I used to shoot my 44 Ruger across a canyon where there was no vegetation to speak of and hence safe to do so but was shooting rocks and 3 and 400 yards. It took a ton of shots to get it walked on but once you made a reference point it was pretty easy.

Not something that would remotely work for any kind of defensive work.

Fifty feet is about the max for me and that's on a good day. Twenty one feet is optimum range to practice at for self defense purposes.

I know a lot of folks here watch Hickok45 on YouTube, but he could definitely do damage to any intended target out to something short of 100yds with a handgun. Not sure I'm exactly correct, but I think his big gong is @ 85yds iirc. That being the case, he could definitely hit a threat or a varmint at that distance. Depending on the gun, he sometimes has trouble w/ stuff the size of a chicken at 50-75, but I'd love to be that precise any day of the week.

Me, I'm in the 7-15yd crowd as well. Plenty accurate at those distances w/ a 3"-4" barrel. At 25yds, I'm OK. Beyond that, I'm also in the rifle crowd or just unloading a mag in the general vicinity.

It'd be nice to be that accurate, but between my eyes, general shooting technique, and the expense...not gonna happen anytime soon for me.

At 15 yards I can hit the pie plate reliably. I've really not gone beyond that distance with the Kahr so I''m not sure what would happen. Maybe I'll try that when ammo./reload components are more available.
A couple of points with respect to getting stuck away from home when the SHTF. First off
you could carry more than one gun. During the winter I usually carry two, most often it's the Kahr and the LCR 357. And if it is summer and I'm traveling I'll have my Kahr, and my
Sig 226 (the sig is in a ramora holster which is jamed between the seat and truck console
with a baseball hat over it ).
Recently, I have begun to carry two spare mags instead of one, I figure the more ammo the better.
If you are concerned about being stuck with just your Kahr have you thought about storing a couple of boxes of spare ammo in your car?
We recently went out of town for 4 days and it dawned on me that we had our guns and spare mags but no other ammo. NOT a good idea! That won't happen again.

Have you thought about carrying a spare gun in a safe in your car?

I always carry an extra box of ammo in a cooler in the back of my vehicle. As far as carrying two guns on me during the summer that is a no go. The karh is my summer gun and even plus temps here in Texas during the summer 95+ leave me feeling like taking everything off so adding another gun on my person is not a feasible idea at least for me. As far as vehicle carry if I did that (which I do on occasion if anticipating driving over 2hrs from home) it would probably be some sort of inexpensive long gun like a H&R 12 Ga Pardner, or Keltec folding rifle in .40 S&W. The keltec can be folded and the 12 Ga can be taken apart and put into a duffle bag. Just run a bicycle cable through the trigger guard and through one of the metal tie downs in the back of your truck van or SUV. Cover duffle with a shirt or jacket. From the outside you cant see it at all. This was just a mental excercise for the members, just to make them mindful of what possibilities they have if they can't get to another weapon and our carry weapon is all we are going to have for some time. Have we practiced with it enough and in variable ways to make the tool effective enough to raise our chances of survival.

My normal range of practice with my CW9 is 7 to 15 yards.
Can make pretty good one shot groups at 25 yards. (at least they are on the target!)

My CZ though is dead accurate at 25 yards when benched.

Hey loki, when the weather is real hot I also normally carry only one gun.
However, if the situation is right I will also carry the LCR 357 in a flash bang holster.
