  • Off center primer hits with P9....problem?

I finally got to the range today to break in the blem P9 I got from Buds

100 trouble free Blazer Brass and 50 Blazer Aluminum. 5 Hornaday Critical Defense no issues. 10 Remington Golden Sabres and 2 misfires. Primer dented but didn't fire. Both fired on 2nd strike.

One of the Remington cases is in lower right of picture. As you can see all primer strikes are not in the center.

Is this a Kahr issue or a Remington one? My first instinct is Remington as all other rounds fired fine. But is the off center hits normal?

That sir, is a case of barely adequate firing pin centering.

Could be the hole in the frame for the barrel is too low. Could be the striker channel was mis-machined (not likely), or it could be the barrel and or chamber is not concentric or just really poorly fit.

Send the pictures to Kahr. They're gonna want the pistol back.

This is particularly dangerous because you may eventually experience a hang-fire, and perhaps have the muzzle pointed in a bad direction or you'll be opening the action while the round fires. Either case is not good.

Insist on a prepaid label too.

Thanks for the quick reply. Well that's a bummer [emoji53]

I'll send an email now and ask for a prepaid label

I'm going to look at my other Kahrs to see how the firing pin looks. You can make out the outline of the primer I think

          Ok here is the CW380

          Here is the CW9

And my CT9...which looks like it could be off center a bit as well..

I'll have to pull out the K9 as well

It's rare to see perfectly centered hits, but they ought to be fairly close to the center. I can think of a few rifles, almost all of my several 1911's that exhibit hits a little off center.

On the other hand, I'd call the hits you showed in that first picture ... "extreme", being on the borderline of actually working.

Again, you might just get a barely adequate hit, that results in a delayed, or hang-fire situation. Those can be dangerous, and Kahr ought to recognize that situation and do its utmost to correct the situation.

You might end up with a new pistol! (maybe, offchance if the frame is the culprit)

Thanks for the help. I just sent them an RMA request and also sent an email with the off center hits and breech face pictures to the service@kahr.com address.

If history is any barometer I should probably hear from them tomorrow as they are usually very quick in returning emails.

Hate to say thats good news, because good news would be not having to send it back at all.

But... they'll fix it up. Be sure to put a note in there about hangfire concerns.

Thinking on it... dayum! A small primer is .175, so you gotta be off by .060" or so. Thats got to be inches off in aim.

I did mention that in my emails. Ian replied to my email simply saying here is your RMA number. FedEx overnight Priority label addressed to Ian also included.

I was able to drop it off tonight so they will get tomorrow.

I'm about a 45 minute drive from Worcester.

Well the P9 returned today. A bit of a surprise as I didn't hear anything from Kahr on shipping etc.

Ok so work order says "reworked trigger and trigger bar lubed and tested good with 24 rounds" Reported problem listed as light primer strikes....huh??? Nothing light about hits....just that pin almost missed primer lol

I can tell it is a different slide....not a new slide, a different one. I don't want to say used but it ain't new. saw these marks inside as well. Also I think the ns could be a little dimmer

Here is a pre send photo

                            And one I took tonight

You can tell that in the 2nd pic the primer hit is more centered.

So I popped in some once fired brass and strike is almost in center now. In other words I didn't see it off center like I posted before.

The only other thing that cheeses me a tiny bit is the fit. The lower is off a little bit

I know it doesn't affect the firearm, just don't like it.

If you are not satisfied with the work performed then contact them and tell them that you are unhappy with it.
Being a blem I'm not sure how far they will go to make things right though as it does function properly now.
