  • P380... I got a good one !

    OK,
Made it to LGS today and just can't believe how much easier the p380 pockets vs the cm/pm9 so I am sold on the p380.

The question I do have is this.
I see that I can get the stainless slide for $500 plus ship and FFL = $530
The Black slide is $530 for a total of $560

So for only $30 difference I don't see a cost advantage or disadvantage either way.

I would use either pocket carry or possibly remora clip-less holster.

    Back to the question...

Has anyone had enough time with the black slide to let me know how durable it is? There will be potential for sweat and or body oil to be touching the slide of course and I want the longest lasting / most durable finish.

    Thoughts?

    As a side note...

I do see myself getting the CM9 or maybe a CW9 later down the road (not to replace the XDMs but to have same trigger on both carry weapons) for use with remora but main thing is getting a pocket solution first and foremost and the PM9 I looked at today just a tiny bit too big for me for pocket carry...

While my P380 is the concealed carry pistol I enjoy shooting the most, it is also my only carry piece I can't carry due to its lack of reliability, which I'm hoping the trip back to Kahr will rectify. I can't address your question since I have the stainless, but I hope you've looked at the past problems with the P380 and make an informed decision. I love shooting it, and would still probably buy again.

      Thanks..
Yes I am going in with my eyes wide open and have read a good deal here.
The one thing that I seem to see is that there are few that can't be made right (if not right from day 1)... but yes the issues reported do get my attention.

Still reading as much as I can on this particular model ....

Getting a pocket solution that rivals XDM / Glock 19 reliability seems indeed to be a challenge...

Do read the reports on the earlier P380's. They had some real issues. From what I have read here the new ones out recently have ran good. If you get a newer one you may be OK, or get one and Kahr should fix it up if you have a problem.

On a side note since you mentioned the CW9 and CM9, I have had both and they were both FLAWLESS and I mean zero problems. Still have the CM9 and wish I still had the CW9. Either one is a good pick.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.

Makes me think of another question.
Does anyone know when the p380 black was introduced?
Would my thinking be right in that if I went with the black one it would automatically be the newer production?

UG.... I am getting pulled back into CM9 and just not pocket perhaps....

            OK another 'somewhat' goofy question.
I have read the "prepping" thread but had this thought...

What about buying a pack of snap caps and doing the prep with full trigger pull each time?

            1) yes I know this will take a lot of time, but I work from home so can do this while on boring work calls LoL
            2) not sure I would be able to slingshot the next round in to replicate the blowback....

Just thinking out loud on how to have my best shot at reliable first range session as I know how failures can stick in the back of ones mind..

Thanks to all for all the help in these threads.
            Thoughts.

The diamond black slides were introduced maybe a year into production? Honestly, about anything you buy new should be pretty new stock - and I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you go into it with your eyes open knowing it will need a break-in then you'll be fine.

The finish on the black slides is IonBond Diamond Black - which is VERY durable. You should have no issues with wear.

You can pocket carry a CM/PM9 pretty easily. However, the P380 is far lighter/smaller/easier. P380 is a good gun because you will "always" have it because of its' unobtrusive size and weight. For the record, I carry a MK9 and P380.

Your idea of snap caps is good practice, but the trigger pull really isn't going to help wear anything in. The barrel/slide lockup wears into place - this is really only best accomplished with shooting. The frame rails need to wear in because they are pretty rough coming directly from Kahr. There are some things you can do to prep and polish on your P380 to help make it smoother - I did many different things on mine here, and have had very good results. Find a good ammo that will work with it and clears the slide stop by a good margin - and you're good to go.

I have a stainless P380, PM9 & black PM45. I prefer the black for a carry piece. When you scratch the black it will show more the on stainless. Your choice.

All my PMs are black and that includes the P380. It's way more durable than some of the other black slide guns out there. Also, you can get the stainless and send the slide and barrel off to CCR Refinishing for a total blackout. I sent 3 Kahr mags to them about a month ago so I'll get a good idea how their Cerahide holds up over time.

Will that make you mags thicker? Make them stick a little bit?
                    Very interesting...

I sure hope not, but we'll find out. Robar did a couple P45 mags with NP3+ and they work fine.

OP I say go with the stainless if you choose to gamble with the reliability issues of owning a P380. I have the black and am not impressed at all. I worry about scratching it all the time.

It is true, the P380 is easier to pocket carry, but the 9mm is a much better round than the .380.
About the slide finish; personally, I like the black slide, but it is easier to take care of the stainless one.

                            Thanks guys.
Still reading all I can find here on the p380.
There are plenty that say they are fine but the latest "Goodbye P380" and others make me pause.

In the end I still think I have to get one. It is just the best pocket solution for me in my mind nothing else comes close.
