Sound wisdom WNYTROUT. A back up plan is always advisable. Thats why I care a spare mag and a automatic or single thumb lock back blade as well.
In a double action striker fire pistol on in the tube always. Now for 1911 the only way to go is cocked and locked where I can hit the safety off once I clear leather in one fliud motion upon presentation.

Hell yes, if not you might as well be carrying a hammer. A rather small and light hammer in the case of my PM9.
Why is it that every time there is a shooting spree they want to take the guns away from the people that didn't do it? :59:

Minority opinion here. On the few occasions I have carried my Kahr, the chamber has been empty.

I am not expecting to be in a "gunfight." Ever. We don't live in the Wild West anymore where he who can draw fastest will live and the other guy will die. Seriously, how many fast draw situations are any of you personally aware of? Even in the news? Be realistic now.

Carrying a loaded weapon to be prepared for a situation where deadly force is necessary to protect your life has its advantages, but the realist in me also realizes the enormous danger posed by lawyers and media-fed public opinion, which in most cases is the greater problem we face.

Any threat that I am likely to deal with personally will afford me enough time to chamber a round. Of it will happen so fast that any attempt on my part to shoot will be worse than the threat. Shooting in haste is not a good idea.

I always carry hot. If not, leave the gun at home and take karate.

When I carry ..always have one in the chamber..but also have the external safety on 99% of the time. Kind of agree with QuercusMax..don't realistically expect to get into a fast draw situation and if I do.. have gotten pretty good at drawing and taking off the safety at the same time. I know people say fine motor skills go out the window when adrenaline kicks in, so also if/when I find myself in a situation that I think there may be an increased chance of trouble I just slip the safety off in advance.

Always, without a doubt, all the time,always...unless the BG holding me up doesn't carry hot and he has to rack it himself after he tells me to "stick em' up"......All kidding aside,if one in the pipe ever worried me,and I'm sure it might to some,I'd just carry a revolver..

It all boils down to what your comfort zone is, personally I carry one in the pipe. I'm older my reflexes are slower now plus I don't want to have to go through another step when drawing my weapon in order to save my ass!
