It's no worse then when ya get a cup of coffee at McDonalds and hit says "hot". We've become a society of sue happy lawyers willing to sue over anything. Yeah, my SP101, an otherwise beautiful revolver comes to mind. Yeah, I noticed on the shield they have that. Marker trick sounds like a great idea. The sue happy thing is just a byproduct of how society today is leaning more and more towards the whole get something for nothing because someone owes me something for gracing this planet with my presence. Stainless steel used for handguns does have carbon in it so it is magnetic and that leave it capable of rusting. Get a lube to use that will penetrate like clp, kroil , pro-shot one step and a few others to use.

It still sounds like the pistol or box was in a high humidity area or was wet. Those foam lined plastic boxs can absorb moisture and will hold it if in a wet enviroment.
