  • 8-rnd mag in CM9?

I've had my CM9 for a couple years now, and the only failures I've ever experienced with it were with the 7-rnd extended magazine, which I understand is common. So I typically carry 6+1 with a spare 6-rounder. Lately I've been wondering if the 8-rnd magazines for the CW-9 would be any more reliable. I'm not concerned about it sticking out the bottom of the gun, I have other pistols with extended mags that have no grip extensions, and I actually enjoy shooti ng them like that. I'd really like to have an extra round or two in my backup mag, I carry in a mag pouch so it makes no difference convenience-wise.

So is it worth it to pick up an 8-rounder, or am I going to have the same issues with it that I do with the 7-rounder?

I have used a 8 rounder as my back mag for 5 years in both my cm9 and cw9. I also used it for breaking on the cm9 when I bought it and has around 600 rounds thru it. No Problems at all with my cw9 7 rounders ether. Maybe the issue has to do with the extended mags. Maybe the black plastic goes to high on them ??

hardluk, you're referring to the 7-rnd magazine with the black plastic grip extension, vs, the 7-rnd CW9 mag, which I think is identical except it has no grip extension, just the standard steel floorplate?

I think you may have a point there. In my research, I did read at least one post where the author believed gripping the mag extension was putting extra longitudinal (front-back of gun) pressure on the magazine, and contributing to the problems. That actually makes logical sense. it also makes sense that extra rearward pressure on the bottom of the mag could translate to torque pressing the top of the mag forward, with the predictable result being a nosedive.

Come to think of it, I've seen a similar phenomenon with a Kel-Tec, where an extended mag that included a grip extension was less than perfectly reliable, whereas a longer mag that just stuck straight out the bottom of the mag well went bang every time.

I traded all of my 7 rd'ers for 6 rd. I didn't even want to go there. Missing the extra, whether at the range, or for carry, really doesn't bother me. Gives me piece of mind, if anything else. If 6+1 isn't enough, you're in a heap of trouble. One of my 6 rd'ers has the metal follower. That's the one that gets carried. I know that a lot of people like that extra round.

If I have to fire at all, I'm already in a heap of trouble. It just irks me to have a 6-rnd spare magazine sitting in a mag pouch that could easily accommodate a larger one. If I can get an 8-rnd mag to be reliable, that will definitely be an improvement to me.

I am sure that you can.....as long as you're careful about the previously mentioned "torque" on the mag, from your grip.

Thanks for your replies, guys. I'll be at a large regional gun show tomorrow, volunteering for my state gun rights organization. While I'm there I think I'll look for an 8-rnd mag with no grip extension. I'm planning on going to a car shoot on Sunday, so I'll even be able to test it out right away.

Welcome to the fort there C2Scott, lots of real nice folks like to hang out here....Like others have said most of us go with the flat base magazines due to them being more reliable overall.....I thank you for getting involved in your states gun rights organization....

I used to live in Charlotte NC a few years ago and it galled me every time I had to get permission from the High Sheriff to buy a gun....Here in Georgia we just passed HB60 giving us even less restrictions on CCW and got rid of the need to get fingerprinted every time you renew your permit at a cost of 40 bucks....We have www.georgiacarry.org to thank for getting behind this legislation and getting it signed into law by our Governor....Hopefully North Caralina will see the light and ease up on the carry laws and get rid or the permit to purchase law....Keep up the good work and again, welcome to Kahrtalk....

                  getsome,
We tried our hardest to get rid of the PPP's last year with HB 650, but had to let it go in order to get our restaurant carry, eliminate restrictions on carrying into places that charge admission, city parks, etc. So we got 90% of what we wanted. Also, any CCW holder in NC is exempt from having to deal with pistol purchase permits, we got that passed in '05. And we don't have to be re-fingerprinted when renewing, but I'm not sure we ever did. I've had my permit for nearly 10 years, I'm approaching my 2nd renewal, and I've only been fingerprinted once.

I use a left over P9 8 round mag in my PM9 and have never had an issue with it or the 7 round mag that came with the PM9...
The ONLY issues I've had with my PM9 are rounds that work out of spare mags while in a mag pouch & HPs that occasionally stick when racking the first one into the chamber.

Yeah, the info I've seen suggests that all Kahr 9mm magazines are interchangeable except the T9. I'm not sure what's different about that one.

never know that about the T9 though. I thought they were all nterchangeable as long as u were going up in round capaicty and not the utter way. I have always been an advocaste that if u buy a cm or pm series, ur after concealment, so why not stick with the flush fit mags.

in looking on the kahr site, I can't see where it says the T9 mags will not interchange with any utter kahr. They show the 8 round magazine and it says will fit all kahrs. I certainly stand correced if I am wrong here to. Nt sayingur wrong but would like to see whgere kahr states this, as to me it makes zero sense..
. My PM9 has over 34,000+ rounds through it, and runs much better than an illegal trying to get across our border

It might not be true about the T9, it's just what I gathered from the information at midwayusa.com.

I get that we buy these guns for concealment, and the flush-fit six-round mag is always the primary carry. But concealing a longer magazine in a pouch on the weak side is so easy, and I carry that way anyway with an extra six-rounder, it just makes sense to have a couple more in the backup if I can.

To illustrate: On a normal day, I have the following items on my belt:

left side: compact LED flashlight of at least 160 lumens in a velcro pouch, extra magazine in a velcro pouch.

right side: carry gun at 4 o'clock (normally the CM9 in a N8-squared holster), AA Maglite pouch at 2 o'clock containing my electronic cigarette.

Keys go in right front pocket, phone in left front, Gerber folder clipped to left front, wallet in left rear, change in right rear.

None of this is noticeable under even a T-shirt. So you can see how swapping out an 8-round mag for the 6-rounder in that mag pouch would not be detrimental from a concealment point of view.

                            From the Kahr site:

                            9mm Magazines

CM9, PM9, MK9, & 9mm Covert Models | CW9, P9 & K9 Models | TP9 & T9 Models SKU#Description MK620 6 rounds, stainless steel with flush baseplate (Fits Kahr Covert, MK, PM & CM models) MK720 7 rounds, stainless steel with grip extension (Fits Kahr Covert, MK, PM & CM models) K820 7 rounds, stainless steel (Fits all Kahr 9mm models except T9 & TP9) K920G 8 rounds, stainless steel with grip extension (Fits all Kahr 9mm models except T9 & TP9) K920 8 rounds, stainless steel (Fits all Kahr 9mm models)

Looks like the "G" designation makes the difference on the 8 round mag as to what all it will fit...

I've never played with the 9mm.

I did have a PM40 that worked great with all of the higher capacity .40 cal mags.
The PM mag is 5rds., T40 mags are 7rds. The PM worked fine with the larger 6 & 7 rd. mags.

I would imagine that the 9mm should be the same.
