  • Anyone look into Tactical Pens?

I have them for airline travel (anything is better than nothing) They get by the Mall Security (Avoid Black and camp colors.

I have a CRKT (The best)
    An Uzi and an AZAN
They're a dime a dozen now on eBay and there's great You tube videos on how to use them....

They work better if you dip the pointy end into some airline food before you stick um....sorta like curare!!!...

I have never carried a purpose made tactical pen, but part of our training years ago was to carry a heavy pen made of metal for a self defense tool.

I use them everyday. I carry two whenever I fly and have never had TSA give them a glance.

I carry a silver colored schrade gen 2 defensive pen pretty much every where I go...Just returned from vacation in fact and TSA didn't even blink at my pen or my flashlight with crowned bezel...If you are looking into one I would fill it with a fisher space pen insert. They write really nice and it has lasted nearly 6 months of daily use so far...

I looked at dozens of models before choosing the schrade. The main reason I chose it was because the cap screws onto both ends, that way I won't loose it when I am writing, and it won't pop off when I don't want it to like some other models...

I know S&W makes one. I was looking at them a while back and never bought one. Think I will.

I picked up a couple of these a while back with my order to Midway.

                      Tactical SHARPIE...

Too much fun, but really robustly made.
I used to have a "tac-pen" well made in the early 80's in the machine shop at work. I don't know where it got to...
I was once asked if I was "a paranoid for carrying my Kahr".
                      "Nope" I said, "just prepared".
" prepared for what" he asked?
                      "more stuff than you are"

I may be in the minority here, but I think "tactical" pens are a waste of money. Can a pen be used as an effective self defense tool? Sure thing. Is a "tactical" pen any better for that purpose than a sturdy bic or papermate?

I carry a tactical pen at work, as we're not allowed to carry guns/batons/tasers/OC/pillows/etc. in an area that has about a 2 C/O:150+ Inmate ratio. We're told to "improvise" if/when it comes to fighting for your life, and a tactical pen has the potential to put odds in your favor...especially over a cheap plastic pen.

A lot of people think they're stupid or for "mall ninjas", but I think they are just about ideal for guys in my position. I got this one for $27 shipped from bladeplay.com and intend on buying at least 3 or 4 more, to keep in different spots on my uniform in case I end up fighting from a tough spot or angle. I hope to never have to fight for my life on US soil, but I expect to if I stick with this C/O job for any length of time.

I would say yes it is better than your standard pen IMO. Just for fun used mine to punch a clean hole through a sheet rock wall. Then I tried a car hood after helping replace my friends hail damaged one. It made a really nice dent in the hood without any damage to the pen...Try that with a bic...They are also a bit larger than the average pen (more ergonomic) and usually have a pointy end for use as a compliance tool, if one has the type of employment that such a tool would be usefull...I would however agree that some models on the market are way over priced, I mean it is still a pen after all. Mine set me back a whopping 20 bones. Not much more than a "nice" pen at office max or similar...

Robinett, I hope you stay safe at work and if that pen makes it so, I say great! But for my money I really can't see spending more on something because it says tactical on it.(All though if I am ever attacked by a car hood I will keep the tactical pen in mind.) But seriously, I am all for people defending themselves with whatever resource they have in hand. I attended a seminar a few years back, before the tactical pen craze, where the instructors demonstrated some excellent techniques with just a good old cheap bic.
