Its funny what you adapt to over time. The heat tends not to be an issue to me. I have worked the ramp and hangers during every part of the year and it can be hot... and it can be really cold, (Shrug). Days over 100 degrees average about 12 a year. Now 1980 and last year upset the apple cart, but on average most days are rather nice.
Now during the "Super Bowl ice storm" we were one big block of ice for a week. My wife is so freaked by that one storm that I had to get my 2012 Dodge R/T Charger with all wheel drive, just in case. Sooooo I get worse gas mileage (about 2.5MPG avg) on the off chance we get another 100yr ice storm in the expected life span of the car (I trade aprox every 5yrs).
My wifes people are from Fresno CA. When we see them, the "scary" talk always come back to Tornados. They "could never live here" based on those scary twisters. I always ask about the forest fires, mud slides, santa anna winds and of course the earthquakes, which they just shrug off as nothing to worry about. Funny thing is, I always get a warning about a storm, do they get a warning about an earthquake?
Guess its all in what you are used to.
You makes your choices and takes your chances.
    Good luck on the search.
I was once asked if I was "a paranoid for carrying my Kahr".
    "Nope" I said, "just prepared".
" prepared for what" he asked?
    "more stuff than you are"
    God Bless our Troups!

        • Them Spyderco knives be dangerously sharp! LOL

          True story (really)

I have two of the smallest that Spyderco makes. Was in Tanzania and the tide at the location that the rig was at was near 18 feet, in fact, you could walk around the rig at low tide. Tide was going out fast and a boat was alongside with on line of a diameter of 4" caught up and could not be untied. The boat's deck crew laughed when I pulled out my little Spyderco to cut the line loose. Took only four cuts! Needless to say, they were in shock that the knife was so sharp. Those serrations really work on lines!

          • 4" line! Wow! my wife and I stopped at a restaurant on the Intracoastal and I tied up our 21-ft+ walk-around-cabin boat... over 4,000 lbs loaded. I like to keep an eye on our vehicles and thought the boat looked different... it was tilting. The tide was going out and though it's only about 4.5 feet between normal high and low tides, the boat was really going to be supported by the 1/2" nylon lines that I used. Fortunately, I noticed the tilt before the boat or the cleats got damaged. I had paid attention to my US Power Squadron lessons and didn't secure the boat with wraps that would bind under the weight of the boat!

After that incident, I designed some lines with marine-grade bungee cords added for tensioning to preclude that.

            • Lucky there. The bungees work pretty good if you have the right kind.

                • That was funny. I can remember some fireworks "fails", too.

I got the "butt rocket" video years ago and couldn't believe that someone would do that. That idiot jumped up after the bottle rocket exploded and high-fived the other guy! I'll bet his nether regions got a bit scorched, though!

This 4th a whole barge went up at once in some U.S. city... the "show" only lasted about 30 seconds.

Also trying to get miles in on my bike and also trying to learn throw knives, which is a lot of fun. Plus, it helps to make extra-chunky sawdust, too.

You ride a bike and throw knives? Does anyone ever get in front of you on the bike?

                        • How about.... Multitools?

What's your favorite multitool? I have a Gerber that I've owned since working as an engineer at a TV station many moons ago. It's the one where you can deploy the pliers with a flip of the wrist. I have a Toolzall-Pro from when I was a steel mill electrician that has a wire stripper type pliers. A few years ago I bought some expensive gazillion attachment monstrosity made out of unobtanium that I use at work as a university television station engineer.

My favorite of all time is my Leatherman Skeletool CX. It doesn't have all the silly things... just the basics (pliers, screwdriver, knife). The carabiner clip doubles as a bottle opener but I've never used it. I have used everything else though. It's lightweight and clips onto my pocket (I use an actual multitool belt case as a magazine pouch). For daily carry it's the most practical.

Last time I was in Dallas it was in July, 1998 I think and it was 93 degrees at 10:30 at night.

I lived there in the 80's and have nothing but good memories. I would find a place outside of town though if I ever go back. I thought about moving to Shreveport, LA a few years back for a job and was planning on living in Marshall, TX. the job didn't work out though.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.

                            • I've been told it often gets to 95/95 (Temp & Humidity). I was stationed in Little Rock in the early sixties and it was often 90/90. Coming from a hot but dry climate, I'd shower before work, at lunch, after work and before bed. In between was just sweat it out.

I don't mind the heat as long as humidity remains low.

                              • I can remember the fun we had in the 70's in Abilene, Texas... Dyess AFB... pre-flighting and flying in those big BLACK B52's... on hot, sunny days. I remember being on alert and getting the morning briefing on how much runway we would need if we had to take off and go to war with a full load of fuel and the EMP emitters and other stuff. It was 108° that day and they predicted that the full runway and the overrun wouldn't be enough, but if you had to take off you could use the dirt and stay in the ground effect... literally... until the airspeed got high enough to start a climb! Yeehaa! That sounded risky, but with incoming ICBMs, it offered a better chance of surviving to avenge our loved ones and the buddies left behind.
