No Rambo stuff, just do your job and go home.
    Exactly

We spent an hour today talking about it and he took me thru the whole episode.

The guy had him dead to rights, shotgun in his face.

And he still managed to win the fight!

However, if the perp's death is a byproduct of stopping the threat, then that is just too bad.

Agree 100% once the threat is stopped dead or alive, you better stop or he's not the only one going to jail.

Having said that a double tap would have been nice. Glad your friend is OK.
To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

Yeah, a double tap seems like sort of the instinctual minimum, but I guess it's all too easy to armchair quarterback these things. Ultimately, this story had a happy ending so I'm not gonna nitpick too much. This guy had the balls and wherewithal to draw and land a shot while a shotgun was pointed at his head! Really a great story.

He didn't unload because as soon as he shot, the perp fell/ran backwards out of sight behind the tailgate of the truck.

My friend carefully pursued him, but the guy had dropped the shotgun, rolled and started running.

He chose not to try to shoot him in the back as he was running away.

          Attack stopped
          Threat left

          I support his decision.
What about the BG's cohort in the truck? With 6-7 spare rounds... What the hell?

Evidently no threat. It's this kind of Rambo attitude that gives us a bad rap.

There are far too many on this board worried about receiving a bad rap. In a life of death situation you do what you have to do. In this case one was enough. In another a case a dozen may not be too, many. You take them as they come. I'd rather be before the court than an undertaker.

                  Good for your friend.

In the one shooting incident (knife on gun) I was involved in I shot twice. Police had my gun for ~8-9 months, hope your friend gets his back sooner- assuming of course it was taken away in the first place.

The perp was alone in the truck and exited out the passenger door to attack my friend.

                        And the truck was stolen.

Very little room between the two vehicles, and that one shot across his lap sent the perp backwards and quickly out of sight behind the tailgate of the truck.

Real world incidents don't always unfold like we would imagine or hope they would.

To OP....congrats to your friend. Got a good head on his shoulders he does.
It might be the dumbest thing you've heard in a while, and possibly from a legal standpoint you are correct. But if he's got a shotgun at your head and you get the drop on him first wouldn't you shoot until there's no more threat or would you shoot twice and stand and look at him? The first rule is shoot until their is no more threat! So maybe I just worded it wrong the first time...

Well, the BG fell down and dropped the shotgun on the first shot, then quickly crawled away. No more threat. No need for more shots.
                            Very interesting...

Proper analysis JF. No threat no more shooting, period.

Besides, he couldn't even see the perp.

From the position he was in, leaned over towards the console, one foot out, one foot in, left hand on the shotgun muzzle, when he shot, the perp just kind of jumped out of his line of sight.

He just didn't stand as still as the paper does at the range.
