  • how much ammo

I usually have a number in mind for my ammo cache, but with all the BS out there I am not sure what I should keep on shelf now.

I realize that guys dont want to publicly state what they have but a pm or two would make me feel better. The calibers are 9mm .45, .40, 5.56/223, and Shoty

I keep around 5k of 22lr, around 1,400 of 9mm fmj, and 150 or so of jhp. Those are my main two calibers as far as target shooting go. I'm not a prepper, I just shoot a lot. I bought a carbine in 9mm just so I could share that ammo with my pistols. Now I keep at least 50-75 or so of the hunting rounds like .308, 7 mag, so on and so forth. I have quite a few 12 gauge rounds as well, but I hardly ever shoot it so my numbers on it are fairly low. I don't think I have a lot of ammo at all, but I have enough to get me through until all this madness panic buying eases up
No sir, I do not own any guns. I sold them all in fear that they might grow legs and murder me and my family since they've been portrayed as such evil objects by our current administration

      I'm not a hoarder.
Do have a variety of caliber weapons though.
I like to have around 300 rounds of high end self defense ammo per caliber.
I do like to target shoot.
But have literally sent tens of thousand of rounds of rounds down range.
I'm proficient with a variety of weapons and don't need a lot of range time
      to keep my skills up.

Lots of short sessions will work.
And I'll use range ammo to punch paper if I have too.

It's the premium defensive stuff I want to load up in ammo cans and store for the future.

Particularly if online ammo sales are banned.
I'm spoiled with very high end stuff right now.

Looking at the current ammo situation its crystal clear that just about everyone that owns a gun thinks they don't have enough.

I've heard of folks buying ammo for guns they don't even own just to have it. I think the theory that ammo will be like S&H Green Stamps is prevalent.

Me, I don't have nearly enough for even under normal (I know, define normal) so I'm way behind the curve for the current state of affairs.

Cleaned out the folks kitchen drawers and tossed a pot full of green stamps. They weren't worth anything if you didn't cash them in. Hmmm... with the market as it is maybe this is the time to sell ammo and restock after the supply has returned.

I would think that you would want to hang onto what you have. With possible regulations prohibiting online ammo sales, possible new taxes on ammo, and registration or licensing of ammo purchasing... supplies won't necessarily be a return to the quantities and prices that were available before this latest panic and shortage.

I didn't wait until supplies were short to build up a stockpile... enough to last a year or so, at least, with normal shooting and with more emphasis on defense ammo than before. Now if you need anything, it will be hard to obtain... especially for any kind of SHTF scenario.

I remember 2009 when I couldn't get any .380 ammo for the P380 I had on order and didn't want to be in that position again. If the "shortage" continues and people get more desperate, bullets will become more valuable and very good barter items... as long as you're careful to whom you give ammo.

Somebody asked me the other day how much was too much and I told them if they had to park their car outside instead of in the garage, they had too much ammo.

Seriously...I'm kinda in the camp w/ Barth and KKing. It's also easier for me because I've consolidated to a single handgun caliber, 9mm. I keep a few hundred SD rounds (somewhere < 500 I guess) in the safe and then 1000-1500 of range fodder. I just keep filling in as I shoot up the range fodder and hopefully that constant stock of 1000+ will hold me thru these whacko periods so I can keep shooting at the range. I think if I got below 500 rounds of range ammo, I might seriously slow down my range trips.

I keep a couple thousand .22lr also, just to go plink with. Thinking of stopping shooting those now b/c they have become harder to locate than 9mm. That is NUTS on top of NUTS.

I too am starting to think of buying calibers I don't have, but still managing to keep that knee-jerk reaction at bay.

Now THERE is an old (great) memory. The S&H Green Stamp store next door to the grocery store and shoe store. Went the way of the wind in the 70s here, but I still remember going there as a kid with my parents and grandparents.

currently i have a fair amount in reserve but i'm real tight when shooting at the range. so you can say that i'm hording what i currently have and just trying to stockpile more. just being cautious...

I've concentrated my resources on reloading components, since I don't generally buy ammo at all. But, because even brass was going into backorder, I ordered the 10mm Auto brass that I could, backordered a bunch, then bought 1,000 rds of ammo to have something to shoot. I believe I bought just one box of defensive commercial ammo (I have no problem carrying handloads) just 'to have'. I simply didn't want to spend thousands on ammo and it's just absurdly expensive, to me. I had 1,500 rds of .22 LR in the shopping basket (I don't own a .22), and then, sadly, changed my mind. Now it's gone. Oh well.

But, for reloading components I did hoard a little bit--about 65,000 primers and 48 lbs of powder. Bullets are coming in still, and I probably have 5,000 commercial bullets and another 3,000 cast bullets, with another 240 lbs now of lead on the floor.

Last I checked I had 5,500 rds of 40 and 45 handloads on the shelf, which would normally be 2 months worth or so--now I expect that to last 6 months and will go to the range with a different practice schedule than usual, with more slow-fire precision shooting and less action, probably.

I figure at my age I won't be able to squeeze off more than a few thousand rounds before they get me, so I don't have too much of a stash. I have about two hundred rounds for each of my high power rifles and five hundred for each of my pistols. Who counts .22LR ammo?

Yeah, that's half the fun...lining up all the boxes into neat little rows and counting them like a miser might his shillings. Maybe more than half the fun.
