I don't have any warm fuzzies for revisionist crap like that!
How did Hanks do that in the Pacific series? The problem today with actors is that they make so much money they often go off the chart on the arrogance meter. In the past Hanks has been pretty sane... just curious.

He didn't do it in the movie, that I know of, but in press coverage after the movie was made. He definitely went from Patriot to Pinhead, as far as I'm concerned. It probably has something to do with the "Bombs" being used on the civilian populace, who supported the Japanese war machine in manufacturing and so on.
If the Allies had invaded the Japanese mainland, they would have had to fight and kill almost every able-bodied "civilian" because they were being trained and readied to fight to the death the impending Allied invasion with everything available... sticks, rocks, farm implements and such, if they had no firearms! Many more lives would have been lost and estimates of up to 1,000,000 Allied casualties -- dead and wounded -- were predicted by the planners who knew what the Allies were facing. The "belligerent civilian" causualties would have been many times that because of the disdain for surrender indoctrination. Besides, we needed actual field tests of the bombs!

I did a search for "unjust and racist war" and this was the first item. I didn't read all of it, but it describes what I said:

Thanks for that Wynn... my father was in the lead amphibious assault on the Japanese mainland in '45. He was on a ship playing poker getting ready for the assault in 48 hours and nervous as heck as they did not know that the bombs were being dropped. I saw a report that said they expected a 50%+ casualty rate in the first wave of Americans to go onshore!!!! Talk about taking one for the gipper! If the bombs were not dropped I'm sure I wouldn't be here talking about it as even my father said that they were not trained properly for the assault on an enemy who was brutal.

they would have dropped the bombs on us in a heartbeat, we knew that, we knew also that they were working on one to. so f--k um. first come first served... I guess Tom Hanks is free to voice his opinion, just as Jesse James was free to screw the tatoo wonder to. But as you know there is a price to pay for those deeds to..

            If not ask Jane Fonda...

What the Hollywood lefties and a lot of the public don`t realize is that if you are going to go into a war,you have to go in it with a heart of ice. If you don`t,you`re going to end up getting your ass handed to you.Does Mr.Hanks think that it was O.K. for the Japanese to be racists against us?
Our parents were of a generation of people who realized that they were in a battle for their very lives and their freedom. They prayed to God,steeled their collective wills and went to battle with the knowledge that if they were not victorious, they would surely face death and tyranny. It was a time when the nation went out to kill and crush the enemy. If you don`t have that type of mindset, you aren`t going to win.You can`t worry about civilian casualties or puppies or baby ducks. And you can`t worry about being "racist" about who you kill. I feel a real fear for this country.
In the area in which I now reside, when I`m placed in a group of four or five guys,I`m known as "the smart one".God help me.

It might not be PC, but second place in a fight for life or freedom is not an acceptable goal. Everyone can't get first place. In a fight for your life, there can't be any rules. First, you have to win the fight and survive to be tried in a court of any kind.
Man, there was a cop chasing someone in a vehicle and the guy stopped and then took off as a cop approached his vehicle... the cop on foot fired at the vehicle! There were cars all around the vehicle and behind him! You don't see that often and that was very questionable!

I'm wondering what would have happened and how history would have been written had we crushed the enemy in N. Vietnam right away - saved 50,000 US lives - instead of the slow burn during the 10 years before the helicopters took off from the roof of our embassy in Saigon. My motto is that when you pull the guns out you should be shooting and not using empty threats.

My thoughts exactly. A police action with one sided rules against the most powerful nation in the world. A few well executed applications of the B52s and that would have been a very short operation.
Same plan could be applied in some of todays battles. Apply enough heat to sand and you get glass. Imagine a pretty crystal palace where Irag use to be.

We only used the B-52's to get them to the conference table, which let them re-arm and re-supply. If we had let the military plan strategy instead of LBJ and his buddies picking inconsequential targets over the coffee table, worrying about offending or hurting any Russian or Chinese or North Koreans training or fighting with the North Vietnamese, we could have mopped them up in a few months and occupied them like Japan after WWII. They didn't like the B-52's at all -- 108 500-pounders, including 12 under each wing. And we could have mined all of the harbors with the BUFF's as well. They can drop a lot of mines... and anti-ship missiles like the Harpoon.

Our biggest victory was that first Tet Offensive in 1968 where we annihilated the VC and the regulars in the South. Those forces became ineffectual husks of what they were before that offensive, but our press turned it into a big defeat and used that to heighten the anti-war sympathy to the point that Johnson gave up and decided not to run for re-election. The anti-war "Lame Stream" Media treated that as a North Vietnamese victory and too much of "the public" bought that version. The people in the streets were the "useful idiots" that the commies love to utilize with their anti-war protests instigated by communist organizers over here exploiting the idiots. This still goes on here and the beginnings of all the big "peace movement" demonstrations can be traced the the communist underground and their sympathizers who've infiltrated or outright started the environmental movement and anti-war protests, where they took up the banner and hid behind those causes when the overt Communist Party fell out of favor.
McCarthy was 100% correct about the people he accused. Many were later discovered to be actual members of and supporters of the Communist Party. A lot of them are coming out of the woodwork now, since there's a sympathetic administration in power along with the useful idiots in Congress and Progressives. And now, this administration is hiring lots of those old Communists and anti-Americans. Just watch Glenn Beck and see the actual footage of these people bragging about Communist tactics of governing best from the barrel of a gun, or their favorite philosophies were those of Mao or Marx, and so on. ARRGH!
I have to shut up! It's just too infuriating and hard to stop ranting. Too many people just say..."Free healthcare... good idea". I just saw something about the government being in control of something like our phones and with no need for innovation or worry about profit, we would all be hauling around 26-pound "cell phones" -- all the same shape and color at $3000 apiece... and prone to breakdowns or poor coverage -- no competition. Who thinks a one-size-fits-all health care plan that will be overwhelmed with increased use and less doctors and of course rationing... decided by bureaucrats... will work for you, especially as you age and become a "burden" instead of a productive member of the elites' great collective, as they "mold" us into their idea of good little citizens... unarmed ones, of course.

Iran would make a better parking lot... centrally located. That would certainly quieten things down in that area. When Bush focused on Iraq, old Qadaffi Duck got the message and voluntarily gave up ALL of his WMDs. He remembered the fist Bush who just narrowly missed him napping in his tent in 1986. He got real paranoid after that. I like guys like the two Bushes and Truman, who walk softly and carry a big stick... AND USE IT, as necessary... not just for show.
Iran is busy putting all of its "nuclear peas" under a bunch of scattered shells now, and it's going to be a b!tch trying to take all of those out when Israel or We get around to taking care of the crazy guy who's building a big cannon next door, pointed at your house. Are you going to wait until he completes the cannon and carries out his threat of destroying you and yours!?? And... the authorities can't do anything 'cause he hasn't "broken any laws", yet??

If you liked em, I'm sure they were great works in filmology. Hmm, is filmology a word? I better check my Mr. Jocko book of words and Alpha abbreviations. Hmmm, D, E F, I think we're good, related to filmologist, must be the dude that drives the camera ya reckon.
