  • Waco, Texas prosecutors and their Glocks

A McLennan County prosecutor who shot out a window in the district attorney’s offices Monday while admiring a colleague’s new gun may face disciplinary action, District Attorney Abel Reyna said.

First Assistant District Attorney Michael Jarrett said he asked fellow prosecutor Landon Ramsay if he could see Ramsay’s new Glock .40-caliber pistol about 2 p.m. Monday.

Jarrett said he asked Ramsay if the gun was loaded and was told it was not. Jarrett pulled back the slide, he said, to double-check if it was loaded and didn’t see a bullet slide into the chamber.

He aimed the gun at a window in Ramsay’s office and pulled the trigger. The bullet shattered the window and struck the brick exterior of the adjacent vacant downtown county jail, Jarrett and McLennan County Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Cawthon said.

No one was injured, which Jarrett said was because he was careful to point the pistol out the window at a brick wall.

“I was being extremely safe,” Jarrett said. “I inspected the gun even after I was told it was not loaded, but it was just an unfortunate accident.”

Reyna said he was out of the office when Jarrett fired the gun, adding he still is in the process of interviewing those involved.

“It’s absolutely unacceptable behavior in my office,” Reyna said. “I am thankful that no one was hurt, but it doesn’t change the fact that I am extremely angry about it, and I will deal with it accordingly by disciplinary action or by implementation of policy, or both.”

Cawthon said sheriff’s investigators Steve Janics and James Pack went to the DA’s office, located in the courthouse annex, to investigate the incident.

Jarrett said he and Ramsay both are licensed to carry concealed weapons and have been through certification courses.

Reyna said despite the incident, “My prosecutors will remain armed in light of what happened in Kaufman County.”

Kaufman County prosecutor Mark Hasse was shot and killed outside the Kaufman County Courthouse on Jan. 31, and Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, were killed in their home March 30.

Former Kaufman County Justice of the Peace Eric Williams is charged with capital murder in their deaths.

fokker is a liar to. He is related to ovomit. Just own up to it, ur not foolin people who know. Pure B.S.

His disciplinary action will more than likely be a month where he can't take home a papa John's pizza every day on county money.

Pull back slide, yep, no round in the chamber.

Release the slide loading a round from the magazine. Pull trigger, Boom.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.

Nah, not a liar. Just utterly incompetent. Is it loaded? No. I need to check. Pulls back slide. No round in the chamber, so releases slide, doesn't notice chambers a round. Really ignorant definition of not loaded compounded by stupid.

We carry Glocks here and I made my own personal rule that I don't press check, I lock the things open every single time. Look through the mag well, look at the chamber, good to go.
Having to pull the trigger to disassemble I'm not taking no chances.

Guys toss loaded guns on my desk all the time.

The brass made a new rule that they can't leave their duty guns in their lockers, they read about a big city where lawyers sometimes go through the officer locker room so they made the rule here.
Now I have loaded unsecure G21's in my armory. Stupid people, stupid I tell ya.

What we need is one really stupid painful but not fatal accident to open some eyes, if one of the brass happens to be the one that makes the goof, so much the better.
If I'm the one they shoot by accident, so much the better yet. I think gunshot wounds make really manly scars.

Yes, they do. Served me well back in the days when I was still picking up wimmen in bars. Got current and final wife that way, sorta. Sadly, she was so easy I didn't even need to use the scars right up front. They really did help in keeping her interested after her initial disappointment, though.

And the stupidest part about all of that is you can't carry your .45

I asked myself that same question.

Both men screwed up. If either had exercised due diligence the gun wouldn't have gone off. Both should be placed on unpaid leave.

Wait the gun wasn't loaded? What use is an unloaded gun when a mad man shows up intent to shoot you?

The sad thing is, this clown Jarrett probably believes this is true!

Sheesh, only a couple of counties over from me too.
