How do you guys handle anti-gun family members? my sister will be in for the next couple days and is all gung ho anti guns.. we had a LONG
discussion about me owning a pistol.. i got the whole "My friend's mom shot their dad because she thought he was a burglar!"

But if you get dragged in, keep your cool and keep it short and simple.

Hmmmm...never even thought about it. ALL of my family, both my wife's side and mine, are gun friendly.

Be polite, tell her you obviously disagree and to please show you the courtesy of not harassing you for your beliefs. That makes her the bully if she pushes it.

Born and raised in immediate post WWII deer hunter country Pennsylvania our genetic failure liberal democrat brother is almost certainly anti-gun, but has the good sense to attempt to keep that to himself around family.

Edit 20/12/2014: Thought about the original question more today. Guess I've never actually had to deal with the issue. Other than likely ^brother I know of no "anti-gun" folk in our extended family nor among friends or co-workers. No matter what age nor where they were born/raised. Some are gun ambivalent, certainly, but not anti-gun. Fortunate we are I guess.

I think I'd respond that well, it's my house. If you dont like the fact that I own a gun I suggest you seek therapy if you can't get over it because I'm not going to change. Of course my family would expect that from me.

I deal with the same thing with my wife's dad. He thinks I'll accidentally shoot one of us. I am open with it that I carry and everybody else knows I'm a gun guy. I am a believer some people need to be accustomed to being and seeing guns any like anything else they will get over it. Has worked on my brother and sister in law. Now my brother in law wants a gun and his wife is okay with it. Before they where terrified.

They walk in my house and see a gun laying there is see me putting mine on before I head out and they don't even notice.

It's tough but my house my rules my family my rules. I don't care if they get skeered or annoyed I'm protecting mine.

My sister has little grandkids so I keep everything locked up (save the one concealed in my waistband) when they are around. I'm pretty quiet about the whole subject so I was pleasantly surprised when her husband asked me to go along when he takes his kids to the range.

My daughter in law was raised in a strongly anti gun family. At 1st she had a hard time knowing I carry all the time. Come to find out she was taught that guns, somehow, jump up and kill people. She wasn't very vocal about it but she let it be known she didn't like it one bit. Last fall when my son, she and my grand kids came for a visit, I did the unthinkable - I took my grandson to the range to teach him how to shoot. The only way she would allow it was for her to come along to supervise, grudgingly. Long story short - by the end of the day she was shooting my CM9 and AR15 and loving every minute of it. Last week my son called to say they had a new Glock 19 and were looking at AR's. Patience can be a great thing.

When I get involved in a conversation like this I usually point my 1911 at them and that usually stops all of the negative comments. I haven't lost an argument yet.

Anti-gunners cannot grasp the idea that shooting is FUN!!!

A whole lot to be said about that! My daughter-in-law was an anti-gun person. My son owned a handgun but could not take it out to shoot it. When my two grandkids were very small, no toy guns or mention of guns around their house and no violent movies. Then one year we went to Disneyland together and the kids wanted a space taser e.g. zap noise and flashing lights. That was OK w/dil for grandpa to buy it for them e.g. did not look like a "real" gun. Then the grandkids went to preschool and kindergarten where they met other kids and learned how to point their fingers and shout "bang, bang". My son was "allowed" to take his handgun to the local range to shoot. Toy guns now OK around the house. Then, eldest grand daughter was old enough to shoot a .22 rifle at the range. Grandpa supplied a single shot .22 rifle that he no longer used. The younger grand son got a BB rifle to shoot at the range. My son buys an AR and finds coworkers who also own ARs to shoot with. Everybody comes home from the range safe, happy,and had good time. Grand daughter turns out to have a natural shooting talent and can shoot tight groups. Grandson can't wait until the range allows him to shoot the .22. Daughter-in-law realizes that her State is not gun-friendly so buys a handgun while she still can. Last Thanksgiving, everyone comes to my State for dinner. My son brings his handgun. The kids want to shoot handgun with daddy. My range says OK. Dad and I take the kids to shoot handgun and they come back home safe, happy, and had a good time. DIL still doesn't go shooting but my son has taken up reloading. A lot of things have changed over at my son's house with regards to guns. With the proper training and supervision, shooting can be fun. I still have hopes that the DIL will someday join her family at the range.
