How is it... there is such a preponderance of folks lining up to get hit with the douche-mallet on gun forums?

The forum and user will remain nameless.

A man wants to "convert" his pistol to a similarly shaped round, same caliber, that advertises double the muzzle velocity with the same weight bullet.

Not good, no matter what "spring" you put in there was my response, and I proceeded to explain the fairly simple physics, which requires no greater math than basic arithmetic - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Then I also quote a nice easy to read, and very factual source... so he can do in depth and learn.

Instead, I'm told what I said only applies to other guns, and that the author said so in his text (he didn't).

Then I try to point out that spring weight does not directly equate to the mass of moving objects. But heck, I'm wrong on that too.

And finally, I tell him that his custom recoil spring, which is two and a half times stronger than the stock spring, is going to play heck with the slide slamming forward too fast, things like cartridge pickup dwell time, force on the locking lugs as it goes into battery, force on the slide stop pin in the frame, etc....

    Nope, its all good.

Well.... the douche-of-the-month club has delivered another one. His gun, my warning... wtf, let him do it his way.

I really think that most really good guns don't live on because someone tried to "improve" them through the years, until they were so improved that they moved into the hereafter. And in this case, hopefully just before the shooter followed....

What happened there, should remain there. Don't bring it home with you.

Find out what range he/she goes to ... AND STAY AWAY!!!
In memory of great-grammy; never understood a word she yelled in polish, but we all knew what she meant.

I love to tinker with my guns, so I am just curious what the spring weight was original and what he/she wanted to change to?

To be honest, if a firearm slide is hand operable then "is going to play heck with the slide slamming forward too fast, things like cartridge pickup dwell time, force on the locking lugs as it goes into battery, force on the slide stop pin in the frame, etc.... " isn't going to be strong enough to cause real damage unless it's a really poorly made gun.

Dwell time in specific can be fixed by just putting a heavier slide on and unless your talking about a desert eagle there is no such thing as active locking lugs on an automatic pistol (passive locking lugs *might* be machined into the barrel and would not be effected, if they exist at all).

Caliber changes are about as common as dirt in the firearms world so what was so incredibly unrealistic about this one?

              Read the first post again.

Dwell time... the period time (not distance traveled) that the bolt face is to the rear of the cartridge pickup point in the magazine. Within that time period, the cartridge in the magazine must rise to the point of being reliably stripped from magazine and fed into the chamber.

Look at how generous the basic Government Model .45 Automatic is in its bolt face overrun (distance) and moderate slide velocities. Now examine the Kahr PM-45 and see how much overrun there is.. practically none. This is one of the primary reasons for finicky feeding in small automatics.

When the recoil spring strength is doubled, is the slide velocity. Energy being based on the square of the velocity (as also with bullets) you do put a lot more energy onto the components. Will they take it? Can't say. Will they take it for as long, and as reliably? Probably not.

I saw an old forum post on another site where a guy was arguing with a chronograph saying the velocity wasnt so because he didn't want it to be because it went against his opinion.

                Simply amazing.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.

                  I read it several times.

I am not arguing that changing the recoil spring pressure may effect the reliability of the weapon to cycle which is perfectly reasonable, I am simply trying to understand why you believe that it will result in an unsafe weapon.

Obviously this is far too condensed a story for anyone to be truly objective.

I guess my counterpoints would be...

No barrel damage results if the rounds are loaded within pressure tolerances for the casing/barrel, unless you consider wearing rifling out quicker barrel damage.

No frame or slide damage from running excessively hot loads because the ridiculously heavy recoil spring will keep recoil slide velocities in check, and may even cause short stroking meaning there's no impact at all.

Once again, this is all with what extremely limited information you have provided so far about the original discussion.

I have known you here for bit and think your advice is precise and knowledgeable. You tried to save a guy from himself. That's a good thing and needs to happen if you want to be a solid being. You are telling him about the bogyman. Where he lives and what he eats. If the guy wants to go to where the bogyman lives and get eaten, rest easy. You did your best. The guy will know he is a d bag when his gun falls apart in his hands. Don't need to tell him. Besides, others read your advice and you possibly save their guns. Chillax baby!

Ya just can't take this stuff to bed with ya and fret over it for days . Sure not worth worry'n about the next day unless the person is kin folk .
