  • Defensive Carry Insurance

How about some thoughts on Defensive Carry Insurance. I've been considering the massive defense expense the could be incurred if one was to shoot a BG, even in self defense. Even if you are cleared in criminal court, a civil court case could financially do you in. There's lots of knowledge and experience on this forum, and I listen well.

You can join the USCCA (United States Concealed Carry Association) who provide pretty good insurance as a benefit to all members. Your level of coverage and benefits can vary based on your level of membership, but I have the highest level that's not a life member, and it's under $24 a month for the membership which also includes a magazine subscription and other bonuses. The insurance provides a retainer, coverage for court costs, coverage for a civil settlement, and a toll free number to connect with a pro 2A attorney in your area. I haven't found anything better. I also have an umbrella policy on me which can help cover me if something happens at home. (But I verified that with my agent, YMMV.) The coverage from USCCA is pretty robust, so I'm a fan. I wouldn't carry without insurance in today's litigious world.

Member of CCW Safe. In many states if the prosecuting attorney determines the shooting was justified you are IMMUNE from civil liability. In my state if cleared the courts cannot even accept a filing of a lawsuit.

What state do you live in? Different options for different places...

In Texas we have a few policy's available that are "insurance" but most that I have reviewed simply get you a Lawyer to talk with the cops about why you shot or shot at a bad guy. That service is much cheaper. Be sure what other coverage you have (example :homeowners) and try not to overbuy. Any civil matter that comes up in the aftermath will try and nail every source possible for the max payout.

I just want a Firearms specialty lawyer myself...

If it is not highly unlikely that you will ever need your gun in self defense, then save the extra cash and use it to move.
I was once asked if I was "a paranoid for carrying my Kahr".
        "Nope" I said, "just prepared".
" prepared for what" he asked?
        "more stuff than you are"
        God Bless our Troups!

Floridians are immune from civil retribution if cleared of criminality. Let me state that another way, if they are not brought to trial based on probable cause or indictment.

Missouri is my home state, Planedude. I travel for work. Wonder what would happen after a BG pop in another state? Really appreciate the incite from everyone.

Missouri has immunity laws similar to Florida.

I have read the fine print on most of the policies out there. CCWSAFE offers the most coverage by far FWIW. Please understand that you are not buying insurance so the companies offering coverage are not held to any standards. You have to hope they can shoulder the $ burden should you need the help.

Midwest seems mostly conservative. Lived here my whole, long life and love it. Appears they are insurance salespeople.

I have all of the insurance that I need AIWB and in my RF pocket. If I was sued for everything I'm worth the people who sued me wouldn't be any better off.
