However, I do play the 5 string banjo bluegrass style. I have a Huber Lexington and a 1927 tube and plate arch top Gibson Mastertone.
The Gibson was originally a 4 string so I had a 5 string neck made for it and put in a conversion flat head tone ring. When I'm not playing the Gibson it stays in the safe along with the guns.
I used to play a lot but arthritis in my right thumb limits my time picking.
My husband and I used to play in a bluegrass band. It was more for fun than anything else, we played local fairs, parties, senior center etc.
    Hubby plays guitar and fiddle.
OK dammit! Now ya got me digging around in the attic for another project. Like I really got time to learn the banjo. But my sister got me this cheapie Kay tenor banjo years ago. It will be pretty cool when I finally play it for her. I already put new tuners on it. I think I'll finish the setup and give it a whirl.

    Thanks!

Dad: Say something nice to your cousin Shirley
Dietrich: For a fat girl you sure don't sweat much.
      Cue sound of Head slap.

        OMG BamJoe players!!!!

I bought a nice little mandolin once. A Tacoma, can't rememeber which, but it was fairly plain jane shaped more or less like F style mando mated with a Tacoma Chief. Anyway, I was learning to play it a bit, could squeeze out a few chords and such, and I got the shock of my life when it I was told "That thing sounds like a BAMJOE"

It sits in the case now.

Back in the old answering machine days, the message I recorded included a couple of bars of "Dueling Banjos" followed by: "at the beep...squeal like a pig".

^^^ gonna have to experiment with that. We'll see where my fingers take me. I'm a flat picker most of the time so... jazz/ragtime?... any suggestions? Gonna experiment with tunings too... I've started scanning the web for lessons... there's a ton of options out there.

Jazz and rag time are perfect for the tenor! If you are looking for good parts, strings, instruction material, Elderlyinsturments.com is a ABSOLUTELY GREAT resource!
I bought a couple of banjos there even before I move back to Michigan (Elderly's is located in E. Lansing, MI)
Michigan is a good State but it wouldn't have been my first choice if I didn't have well over a 100 relatives here.

Well, she's ready for strings. (I had to order them). She's all cleaned up...frets polished... The neck was bowed and twisted and there's no truss rod. So I decided to steam the neck straight. I clamped it to an old level and steamed it over a spaghetti pot. I was worried about the finish but no harm done. And it came out straight. Who'd a thunk it? I'll play it with and without the resonator and see what sounds best. I like the looks without.

Have (had) a 71 Martin D-18. Unfortunately, cut off two fingertips in the wood shop and that ended my guitar. Passed it to my son who can play anything with strings. Has the Martin, my grandfathers Gibson Mastertone Bella Voce from about 1932. Beautiful 4 string banjo. Also has a Guild 12 string, a mandolin, Fender Strat and a custom one off bass. Cool thing is he can play them all and play them well.

You know the original guitarist for Black Sabbath also lost fingertips on his fret hand. Kept on playing.

The way you phrased that makes me picture his fingertips flying off while playing a show, blood spurting everywhere, and the music playing on.
