The sane part of my brain is making the same argument.

With the hardware I have now, I'm already well-equipped for the zombie apocalypse anyway. And I've got just about every carry condition covered, too. Which really just leaves collecting and shooting...and if that ammo is expensive, the latter probably isn't an option anyway.

The crazy gun zealot part of my brain keeps telling me how much fun it would be to own that toy!

I hate to stimulate the crazy part of your brain (and mine), but ammo for the Five Seven doesn't appear to be as expensive as it used to be, and is plentiful. In fact, it looks like it's generally much less than good .380 ammo:

Well Bosco, I'm going to do us both a big favor here. For all of these years I've been lusting for a Five Seven, I really haven't done a great deal of research on them. Lately, I have done quite a bit of research, and guess what? The Five Seven is a SAO hammer fired pistol. The hammer is fully enclosed under the slide, and I guess that's why I assumed it was striker fired. So, it's essentially a 1911 on which you can't see or manually manipulate the hammer. With such a light trigger pull, I think one would be crazy to use this thing for carry or home defense without the unconventionally-located safety being engaged. Therefore, it's been scratched off of my lust list...and I assume yours. You can thank me later.

I would imagine that FN has addressed this over the years but I haven't followed this issue since I lost interest.

Well, you did fix me up good during my .22 CB crisis a couple/few years back, fer which I still thank you. But I at the moment have plenty of shorts. Std copper washed RN works best in the Minx. And I prefer them anyway. At least for offensive use. Best for just rattling around without exiting the brain pan.

And speaking of shorts....I haven't worn a pair of long pants for a year and a half now. Not since just after beginning chemo treatment. A "because I can" statement, it's been.


And, now back to the .40 sucks/don't suck original topic...

Thanks...wasn't aware of that, but I've scratched the Five Seven off my wish list. I know it's perhaps illogical, but I've always had an aversion to 1911 style, SAO pistols. I've never owned one, and have never even fired one. I think it's true that you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

I think the .40 is best suited to the "compact" or duty-sized pistol. A Glock 23 holds 13+1 of .40, which is a susbstantial capacity of a capable round. A Glock 22 is 15+1 in a G17 sized platform. Substantial and close enough to 9mm capacity in the same platform as to be a good choice. .40 recoil is manageable in G19 or larger pistols. My only .40 is an HK USP Compact, and firing hot factory ammo isn't unpleasant.

However, I've also fired .40 out of a Shield. It was not pleasant. Not .357 Magnum J-frame unpleasant, but it still was not fun. .40 is such a powerful round that it's pretty snappy in a small pistol. The capacity of a CM40 is 5+1. 6 rounds of .40 vs 7 rounds of 9mm in a carry gun is a big difference, IMO. I want as much capacity in as small a platform as possible. To my mind, I'd rather have seven rounds on board than six in the same size platform.

But if I was in the market for my first pistol, I'd be all over a police trade in G22 or SIG P229. Heck, even new pistols seem to be cheaper in .40 than 9mm. But $400 or so for a P229 with 3 magazines in .40 is a screaming deal.

I shoot at least 200 rds. when practicing without any difficulties. I wouldn't want my MK to be in .40, a bit small in stature. Anything larger is a breeze...………………………….

Nice to hear from another P2SK fan. I, too, have one in .40, and also have a a bunch of H&K USP Compact magazines with the X-grip attachment to make range days more enjoyable (and usually carry one as a spare). Amazing quality, and an amazing shooter for its size. I can shoot it all day without issue.

It's a chunky little guy, but in my Black Arch IWB hybrid holster it just disappears.

Our experiences are not dissimilar, and I've never carried a 1911, nor cared to. I'm a big fan of gross motor skills in times of stress, and that safety release is just one step too many in my opinion. (I'm not arguing universally...I just know my own personal limitations). I don't even use slide releases...always sling-shot for me.

I've shot 1911s at the range, and found them quite enjoyable. But not enough to ever try to rewire my shooter's brain to learn the system.

But I have hedged my bet a little bit with the Sig Legion: big caliber, big frame, big beavertail, and a great SA pull (after the DA first trigger pull). Close enough.....

Well said, and those are my thoughts on the 1911 design. I'm not a collector, and all of my guns (with the exception of a couple of .22's) serve as home defense and/or carry. If I were a collector, I'd undoubtedly have a few 1911 pistols in my inventory. It would be absurd and silly to be critical of the design, but like you I simply know my limitations.
