  • Let's talk Knifes

I've been slowly working on my knife collection. Like my firearms I want the bunch too be small and owned for a "need".
So far I have two cheap, flimsy, free-be Maxum folders I use for any crap work.
My EDC is a Kershaw Scallion DLC and I have a Ka-bar BK2 Campanion for the field. I've been wanting to add a bigger more heavy duty folder to the collection for rougher work and sd. Yesterday in another forum I stumbled on a LNIB Zero Tolerance ZT0200 for sale. From the guy's pics the knife just looked like quality and after a quick search...."quality" was pretty much all I read about the ZT0200. The price was right and the knife had the features and size I wanted...I grabbed it.

just never got caught up in the knives thing, no doubt they are like kahrs, very addictive..
. My PM9 has over 34,000+ rounds through it, and runs much better than an illegal trying to get across our border

What's your "need"? I'm assuming pocket-carry SD. If so, anything that fits nicely in your pocket and your hand that you can quickly bring into action. I keep a Tailwind Assist in my pocket. I got it for about $50 and sharpened the edge a bit myself. I practiced before I sharpened it (and keep practicing with it sharpened now that I don't fumble it) and it's easy to get out and get into the game.

Yea, I carry a pocket knife about 90% of the time. Generally a very small lightweight Buck or Gerber. However, when I can't carry my pistol, I do carry a cheap $9 Chinese copy tactical folder. It is good looking, rugged, holds a good edge, blackened blade with a clip. Very easy to flip open and liner locks. I just can't see me spending $100 on a good quality knife when I have so many already and this Chinese copy is so nice. It will do the job. However, I do appreciate good quality and sometimes I look at them and think, maybe it's time to spend some real money on a good one. I just don't carry a tactical knife often enough to justify spending that kind of money on a knife, because I usually have my PM40 on board. Lots of nice knives out there.

I have a few auto openers of various styles. Fun to own but illegal in my state to carry unless one is in certain lines of work or handicapped.

          Here's a stag Mikov, 4" blade.

Boker Speed Lock, very fast and robust, yet gorgeous.

There are plenty of good quality knives out there. No one brand is significantly better than another for all applications, so choose whatever looks good and fills the need....whatever floats your boat.

I prefer Benchmade knives because most of their knives are made in my hometown and employ some of my former neighbors.

A few weeks ago I started searching for some kind of small river knife or something I could wear around my neck if I can't carry my gun somewhere. I found this CRKT minimalist knife. It comes with a kydex sheath and a piece of paracord about 3' long so you can wear the knife around your neck or tie it to your backpack strap or lifejacket or whatnot. Also the sheath came with a belt loop attachment that hooks on using 2 screws. I took a little ball chain like from dog tags and use with it because it is less noticable than the paracord and it makes for a nice carry around the neck. How often will this be useful I'm not sure, but its another option and a neat knife for < $20.

I have a couple of Kershaw's that I carry daily at work to open boxes and such as needed.

I have this model in my signature red, serrated blade, and also a green plain edge.

Hubby has a Kershaw that he carries on duty (it's rough and tough), as well as a couple of others for daily carry. I got him a really nice Benchmade for Christmas. Also got him one of the composite blades from Kershaw for our anniversary a couple of years ago.

I carry a Gerber Gator I got at Wally World for $30 or so and I like it fine and its easy to open....Bought my son a $125.00 Benchmade folder for Christmas and don't get me wrong, it's a very nice knife but I don't like the blade latch mechanism at all so I'll just keep my old Gerber....How do you folks sharpen your blades?...I never had much luck with an oil stone so I bought one of those ceramic chok stick sets with a course and smooth pair of sticks at a 20 and 25 degree angle set into the block and it seems to work ok but sometimes I can get a preetty good edge and other times doing the same thing it seems to dull one or the other sides of the blade...The knife guy at Bass Pro Shop tried to sell me one of those diamond impregmented sharpeners on a hand held stick but it was pricy so I bought the chok stick thing but I may still try that other diamond stick sharpener as the guy said it really workes good...What do y'all think...

I have a Spyderco Clipit Endura that I have been carrying for about 15 years. For sake of reference, I'm 27. Clip works great, EXTREMELY easy to open and close one-handed, great size, and holds a nice edge. Gets used for miscellaneous day-to-day tasks, but could be used defensively if the need should arise.

Here's where someone was selling one (my my my how cheap these old knives are these days). Figure it's easier than my trying to take and post pictures. http://www.armslist.com/posts/4982

I carry a Kershaw assisted opening knife with me daily. Comes in very handy when you only have one hand free. I have a bigger Kershaw, that's opens with one hand but you have to flick your wrist to open it, I guess that's a gravity assisted opening knife. It has a 4" by 1" blade and looks pretty intimidating. Both of them seem to be pretty good knives, hold their edge very well. Also have a Benchmark pre-production number 9xx out of 1000. That one I keep stashed away and hope to sell it to a collector some day.

I have the same model Kershaw as my EDC workhorse. Mine is all black with a black DLC coated blade (more manly ). Its a tough little sucker, the blade/lock is rock solid and after years of use still wont budge. This Scallion is difficult to open one handed, though....not that it matters, its not intended as a flick blade.
I'll have some pics up once I get the ZT0200.

I carry an SOG Pentagon Elite. Great knife, opens and closes effortlessly with one hand. They are located about an hour from the house and if you just stop by they'll sharpen it for free although it holds an edge well and is nice to sharpen.
Their go to repair guy has a table at our local gunshow and does custom knife handles on the side. He asked me to make matching gun handles so he could offer a knife, a gun handle and a pen with all the same wood.

I often times wear a neck knife also just to free up the belt line. Kind of convienient. The brand on that one is slippin my mind at the moment and it's not around my neck today.
