I've been looking at the Mosin Nagant. Specifically the carbine. What do you think of them?

That is amazing- I had no idea on a shot like that the bullet would drop 32 feet. thanks for the link to the cool video. I shot expert with my M16 in the Army, but never learned anything about long distance shooting like that. I was thinking about getting a Mosin since they're so cheap. Are they all pretty much that accurate?

Most fun you can have with a high powered rifle that cost under $150. Ammo is cheap and there built like a tank.

        I love shooting mine.

I like my carbine (91/59) enough that I decided to trade my Savage Scout in on something else. The reasoning behind that is:
Both rifles are very similar in size.
After trying it, I never liked the forward optic mount on the Savage, so both guns were set up for iron sight use.The Savage was little easier to shoot accurately with a longer sight radius and peep sight, but elevation changes required a screwdriver.
The Savage is faster to operate with the bolt handle being positioned at the rear of the bolt, but I like the length of pull better on the Mosin.
I never liked the big rubber recoil pad on the Savage. The metal one on the Mosin would surely leave a lasting impression.
.308 and 7.62x54R are quite comparable, but cost certainly favors the 7.62x54R.
I needed room in my safe.

          Regards,
          Greg

I have an M44 Polish made, good gun, shoots well, and until I got my AR, I considered that my assault rifle. Bottom line, they are simple, cheap as anything, hit plenty hard, and fun to shoot too.
Attitude: it takes 43 muscles to frown, 17 to smile...and 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

              I have a M44 too, at least I think I do, I thought I had a 91/30 but turns out it's something else.

I haven't shot the M44 yet but it's on the to do list.

Resurrecting this thread coz....Daddy bought a new toy today.
It's an M91/30 Izhevsk built in 1942. Bought from Aim Surplus and picked it up today at my FFL Gunsmith buddy's place. I asked him to fully check it out and make sure it wasn't junk. He said it looks like it was barely ever used. Headspace is perfect, barrel crown perfect, rifling perfect. It's in pristine condition.

My son and I took it down and cleaned all the cosmoline or whatever the Russian equivalent is. It was packed completely in the stuff. Got her all put back together as the sun set so I didn't get photos yet. We plan on shooting this beauty this weekend.

It's really amazing to think where and what this rifle may have been and seen in it's past. The Siege of Stalingrad, The Fall of Berlin. Who knows.

Next on the bucket list is an M1 Garand. I love history. I love holding it even more.

                Pics to follow in daylight.

That notch in the rail is supposed to be there

Good luck with it Tinman. I also have a 1942 Izzy(Izhevsk) that has also been recrowned and counterbored. It is a lot of fun to shoot and the milsurplus ammo is cheap but very dirty and corrosive . It's very important to clean the barrel as soon as possible after every shooting. I have a small bottle of windex I take with me to the range to spray down the barrel. I have recently heard that PB Blaster is good for cleaning the barrels but have not tried it myself as of yet. I have used PB blaster on nuts and bolts before and would not be suprised if it did do a good job on the barrels. I keep the inside of my barrel well oiled between shootings as they will rust up if not kept in a dry area. Happy cleaning.

If these three could speak I'd love to hear what would have to say.rifles 001 (640x480).jpg

I've had the urge to get one. They are only $119 at the EXPENSIVE gun shop and they have already cleaned them up for the buyer.

But I would want a bent bolt handle and a $800 scope. I want to try the 1000 yards and I cant see that far with my eyes. I guess that would make the rifle an accessory for the scope instead of the other way around.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.

Want to see what will be the end of our country as we know it???

$119 already cleaned? that's a deal. I'm still cleaning this one. It's better but it's still oozing from all sorts of places.

Better photos to follow in daylight and all cleaned up.

Buy two Nagants and four tins of ammo along with one box of cleaning supplies.

You are now ready for the Zombie Apocalypse...

Even if it fails to happen in fifty more years.
I was once asked if I was "a paranoid for carrying my Kahr".
                          "Nope" I said, "just prepared".
" prepared for what" he asked?
                          "more stuff than you are"

We may well end up with two. My son is so enamored with it he's going to buy one. He's got his heart set on a Colt AR and is saving his pennies (hopefully he'll have a career soon) but he wants one of these as a toy and stand in SHTF gun until he can buy what he wants.
