    Thanks!
Popeye, you're partly to blame for this one. Read your post and decided to pull the trigger.

Ammo should arrive today. Range trip scheduled for tomorrow.
Just about have all the gunk cleaned out and gave it a good EZEOX all over.
    Will see how this goes.

That notch in the rail is supposed to be there

If you go looking for Scope mounts and turnned down bolts may I suggest:

      http://www.rocksolidind.com/

Interesting site and products. I have not used them but have freinds that have.
I was once asked if I was "a paranoid for carrying my Kahr".
      "Nope" I said, "just prepared".
" prepared for what" he asked?

Likely going to keep this one as Little Josef Vissarionovich originally intended, but we'll see.

Well, Ammo showed up a little early. My son had to pull a 1900-0700 shift on the ambulance so he conned me into ripping up to the range and trying the Izhevsk out before he had to bug out.

Since it had been checked out I was pretty confident it would be ok, but still had some nervous butterflies.

Tried loading from the clips the ammo shipped on. No go. Manually loaded the first 5.

All I can say is WOW!! Talk about kicking like a mule. A Russian Mule (мул). Holy crap. I was sitting at a bench on a block. It kicked my ever lovin behind.

I stood up and it was loads better but still painful. I was tucked in tight and good stance but WOW this thing kicks butt. Did ok on the 50yd range. I saw and hit the paper. I'm ok with that. There's no way you go to the range and rip through 100rnds of this stuff.

Here's some iPhone pics of the kid shooting it. More to follow of the old man as soon as the kid sends em to me.

Kicks huh? Maybe I should leave mine in wall hanger status, I got a low pain threshold you know?

I've heard that you notice right off if there's a misfire and they kick some.

I'm gonna have to try it, I'll probably cry but I just gotta know, ya know?

Tinman they make an inexpensive recoil pad for them that will make that beast a lot more fun for you to shoot. The sharp metal edges on the butt plate on those Mosin's is a killer for us older guys.
                    Cost about $14 on Amazon

Your quite welcome. Glad I could save you a couple trips to the Doc's office complaining of shoulder pain. Chances are you will shoot it a lot better also. I know I shoot mine better with it on there. I also like the fact that it adds about an inch and a quarter to the length of the stock. Just seems to work better for me.
Warning though. If you like the Mosin's do not under any sircumstances ever, and I do mean never ever even go near an SKS. At this time I won't even talk about the terrible addiction of M1 Garands and Carbines.

So Tinman, who's the old guy you added in the last picture, your grandpa?

Popeye, I have a Mosin 91 and a 44 carbine as well as an SKS. Haven't shot any of them yet. Which one should I shoot last.

Maybe the Mosin last, hard to shoot even an SKS with a busted shoulder. I better get me one of them buttstock pillows my own self.

Bawanna Shoot the SKS first. They kick about the same as a 30/30. I'm serious that recoil pad for the Mosin works wonders. I think that thing kicks harder than my Garand. The butt plate on the Garand is alot more refined and the edges rounded then that of a Mosin. Younger guys, or guys with a little more beef in the shoulder area might not have a problem with the Mosin recoil. At 66 though it's not fun for me.

I handle my Garand alright although its been a spell since I had it out. Hold it often, shoot it seldom.

I'll get me one of them pads for the Mosin.

I shot other SKS's long ago, just never got around to shooting my own. Guess I'm due. I bought it right before the Clinton ban. Paid 90 bucks all cleaned up, worth a bit more now based on ones I seen.

Yes Bawanna you could turn a pretty good profit on the SKS if you ever decided to sell it. After I cleaned up my Mosin and refinished the stock a friend offered me twice what I paid for it, which got me to thinking maybe I just ought to sell it to him and buy two more and do the same thing over again. Only problem is as of late I haven't seen to many 91/30's in good condition with laminate stocks. Which is the main reason he wanted it and was willing to pay that kind of money. That and it been refubed counter bored and recrowned and for a rifle it's age still shoots pretty darned good. Using cheap commie ammo though it's only going to be so accurate. I'll have to get some of the good ammo and see just how accurate I can shoot it. They are fun and a cheap way to shoot once you tame the recoil down.
