  • A Conundrum...

While on our trip to Branson this weekend my wife decided we needed to have a "friendly wager," which ended up being played out over 18 holes at the Pirate's Cove miniature golf course.

If she won, I would buy her $600 worth of "shiny stuff," aka jewelry. If I won, she would give me $600 to buy a new gun. And yes, this was ALL her idea.

So I'm in the market for a new gun.

Now for the conundrum... while the kid in me wants to run out and buy a new toy, I don't really NEED a new gun. I have my CM40 for sub-compact carry... my XD9SC for higher capacity sub-compact carry... my Glock 23 for home defense / occasional winter carry (maybe)... rifles and shotguns for plinking and hunting, etc.

And on the flipside, a couple weeks ago my wife had the "sudden" realization that we live in a modern society of violence and crazy people, and realizes that she needs to learn how to shoot effectively and protect herself, if need be.

So I'm thinking of using the money to either buy her a gun, or buy "us" a gun that she can get proficient with and possibly carry, once able to do so.

She's not a complete noob... she qualified on the Beretta 92 in boot camp... she's shot both the Kahr and the Glock, but she doesn't like the heavy recoil. She hasn't shot my XDSC, but has shot other 9mms and is more comfortable with those.

And to keep things simple, I'm leaning more towards the revolver side of the aisle.

So what suggestions do you have?

Let's see, $600.00 to spend and make the better half happy....How about a Ruger LCR .38 special and a nice shiny trinket like a bracelet or necklace to top off the deal....It's a win/win for you get a new gun and a happy wife at the same time....

I kind of like getsomes idear cept I'd go J Frame, like a 638. Got my wife one and it don't hang up coming out of a purse but if need be can still be c0cked. Plenty light to carry and she actually does every day. I'm so proud.

If she don't plan to carry but be a night stand or range gun combo I'd go Ruger SP101. A 3" would be sweet but a 2 might pull double duty as a carry if she doesn't mind the weight.

The weight makes it a nice shooter but a little heavy to pack.

I love Rugers but I'm not an LCR fan, but she might be.

Conundrum, I gotta look that up, just gotta be arguing with one self in one self's own head.
Your to be commended for wanting to spend your winnings on the loser.
That didn't come out exactly like I meant it. Might be a good get out of sleeping on the couch card though.........................

Have to agree with getsome. If you really don't feel you need a new gun "NOW" etc, get one with/for her that would would make her happy. Would make her happy, give you both something to do together, and could be used in your favor when sometime down the road you find something you really do want. Also please consider spending a few dollars out of the 600 to buy a dictionary and send to Jocko so he can look up conundrum!!

A small snubbie .38spl revolver makes a great gun for CCW if your intent is to escape in one piece without a prolonged incident. This early 1980's Stratford Charter Arms "Undercover" weighs a pound, and has a factory bobbed, "Pocket Hammer"

Simple, no muss, no fuss. (The British jacket has nothing to do with it)

Nah. Let her get her own gun. Stick that $$$ in your back pocket and start making it a point to check out every used gun counter you can find. Don't pull the trigger (so to speak) until you find something really special that you had no idea you wanted until you saw it.

P.s. if you were really generous you would have let her win.

If you REALLY want to score points for the future, bring her gun shopping rather than trying to decide what we all think she will like.

                              A Conundrum...

I say put the cash in your pocket until you find something you really want. Ask yourself this, if she had won, would she not have bought the jewelry? If you are dead set on spending it on her I will offer up a suggestion contrary to the revolver posts. Let her pick out what she wants. Once I bought my wife a gun I thought she would like. She hated it. Then I let her rent a half dozen guns she wanted to shoot and she found one she loved. Wish I would of done that from the start, then I could have saved myself some headache and cash. Just my $.02.
