Go with the P-09, by all accounts its a fine fine choice. Hickok and Sootch on YouTube have both reviewed it recently and both speak highly of it. The 9mm version is on my list, coming soon hopefully.

IMO, you are short-changing yourself by excluding "mainstream" guns from your search.
The G23 is the finest balance of power and capacity I've ever carried. If you don't plan to carry, the G22 gives you two additional rounds.
The XDm is another great choice.

I am getting pretty partial to CZs myself. Reports on the P-09 are great and there are now parts out from CGW to improve the trigger if you like. The P09 gives you a hammer, SA/DA, reversible controls, etc. If you like striker, glock and the XDs certainly have their fans. I have a Beretta PX4 that seems to be a nice gun too. The P-09 is working its way towards my wish list.Aftermarket accessories for Kahr Pistols at https://lakelinellc.com/

I don't consider a 40sw any kind of a hand cannon at all. Maybe if you were looking for something in a 44mag, 454, 460, 500 or maybe the 50ae, I could apply the term hand cannon to it.
To me a hand cannon performs at the level where the folks next to you in the lanes at the indoor shooting range will stop, go and sit down and wait for you to finish due to the concussion they are taking from your weapon. Although that may not be a great way to make good friends at the range... The 40 just does has not have that kind of power.
Magnum Research (Kahr) makes a dandy semi auto in 50ae in the desert eagle that would certainly better accommodate your dreams of a hand cannon. That is what I recommend for you."The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it."

Very good point. But if 40 is the formula and it is for every day conceal carry, can't beat a PM40. If 40 is the formula for the range, can't beat the M&PPro40. Neither are "hand cannons". Both are very effective.Originally posted by otium View PostI don't consider a 40sw any kind of a hand cannon at all. I would have to jump on the XDm bandwagon. I have a 4.5 9mm but have shot the 5.25 .40. These are nice full size guns that don't miss a beat right out of the box. I personally didn't notice an accuracy improvement going to the 5.25 with the adjustable sights.
I'm with the others that a .40 isn't a cannon, but if you are looking for a fast shooting hi-cap gun this is it. These almost feel top heavy when you first pick one up but the long barrel helps greatly with the muzzle lift and these guns have good triggers with very short resets.

If you want something in a .40S&W but not see it at every shooting range or gun shop; a hand gun your friends will likely not own, then try the Glock 34gen 4 FDE. It has a 135mm long barrel (5.32") which will definately add more power than a G23.
These will run you 650 to 725 dollars depending where you are located in the Country. I have this same gun in the G34 9mm and I love mine alot.
Now if you truely want a .40 Cal Hand Cannon as you said, then get yourself the Kahr CM40. It'll likely make you feel like you just shot a true hand cannon. :>)

HK FS USP Tactical 40.Originally posted by balok1701 View PostI'm looking for a maximum capacity handgun in .40 with at least a 4" barrel and minimal safeties. So far the CZ P-09 looks good. I would prefer something less mainstream than a Glock or M&P. Size and weight are not a problem, but my hands are average size so grip circumference is a factor. Any suggestions?
Add a Jet Funnel for 16+1.
And a LEM kit to eliminate the safety.
This is a 9mm but you get the idea.

I've got a HK FS USP Tactical 45 (12+1)
with a Match LEM hybrid trigger that's a real tack driver.

I really like my P30 40 Light LEM too (13+1)

There's also a long slide P30L if you want more barrel.

Okay, I know you were looking for something other than a Glock, but I have to say at least try a Model 23 or 22. I have carried a 23 for 13 years, thousands of rounds through it and it has made a believer out of me. I hate the trigger, but they WORK."The Deacon" Zoot Shooter #84

Yup I noticed.Originally posted by O'Dell View PostHey, Barth. I suggested a USP 40 about twenty posts ago, but I don't think anyone is listening. I think we're the only HK fans in the forum.
Should have said +1 on the USP.
I believe the USP may have been originally designed for the 40 S&W.
And Yes, I think we are nearly alone in being HK fans.
But I think there is at least one other.
Somebody here, not us, has a HK USP Elite...

or literal? .40 S&W is a hand cannon compared to a .22 or .25, but I think the OP was pretty clear about what he wanted.
