  • Looking for .40 hand cannon

I'm looking for a maximum capacity handgun in .40 with at least a 4" barrel and minimal safeties. So far the CZ P-09 looks good. I would prefer something less mainstream than a Glock or M&P. Size and weight are not a problem, but my hands are average size so grip circumference is a factor. Any suggestions?

Just to keep looking until you find what you are looking for and to be sure it satisfies what you intend to use it for. It's a process everyone goes through. Not trying to be insulting...just honest.

I am happy with my XDM 40 4.5"... You could check one those out.

16+1 capacity!, comfortable grip w/adjustable back straps, no manual safeties.
Mine is my go to H.D. pistol wearing a Streamlight TLR-1 light on it normally.
It is reliable, accurate and a pussycat to shoot, with the light on it recoils less then my 9mm's

Look closely at the Beretta PX4 .40, especially the C model, constant action trigger. Very Kahr-like trigger, no safety. <6 lb tuned pull easy to do. 15 + 1 with flush mag, 17 + 1 with extended. Soft shooting, accurate, reliable, reasonably priced. Just a little hard to find.

HK USP 40. Ultra reliable and carries a 14 round magazine. I got mine as an ex-police pistol for $400. It's in almost perfect condition, has excellent night sights, and came with three 14 round mags. Since it's a full sized gun, I don't carry it , but makes a perfect home defense weapon.

I am going to suggest what I always do for a duty weapon. Glock or M&P. There are good reasons why these are mainstream. Having said that, CZ's are great guns so you will probably have a good weapon with that as well. Most modern guns are of good quality and are reliable, but when factoring in cost, ease of use (no safety or decocker, same trigger pull each time) its usually Glock and M&P on the short list.

                      I would second the XD.

Of those mentioned so far I'd rank them: CZ, HK then M&P. Personally I have a hankering for a Para 16.40. But I'd go for a CZ P06 if I ran across a good deal but that's only 10 rounds. Nah, I'll keep looking for that 16.40.

I like my Beretta 96 inox. I think they are an overlooked firearm. Of all the firearms I own, it's my favorite. Not everyone likes the trigger.......I do, with a little spit and polish.............when oiled up, they run like a smooth sewing machine. Well tested. Eat any type of ammo. Not for carry, great range and home gun. It's the firearm that eventually made .40 cal my favorite to shoot.

I have a Beretta 96A1 and have to agree, they are a really good gun. I put the Wolf d-spring kit in and it really improves the trigger, they only hold 13 rounds if that is a problem.

Although they do not fit your requirement for minimal safeties, for me,personally the Ruger SR 40 fits my smaller hands. My SR 9 has been 100% from day one with normal Ruger toughness and reliabllity. I am fine with the trigger but it can be worked on if preferred. In the local gun store yesterday I was shown the SAR line (9mm) a "Turkish CZ" DA/SA with a typical rough DA pull. I have always liked the way the CZ fits my hands although I do not have one. The SAR was highly recommended as having the best fit and polish in the price range. I would think it also comes in .40 cal but do not know for sure.
