Please check my post. I did not say it was mandatory. I posed a "what if?".
What if those who endorse "reparative therapy" come into power. It is not much of a leap for a platform plank to be authored into a law and make it mandatory. They would if they could. I would never trust a politician not to do such a thing.
The point being: What group would next need "reparative therapy" to cure their misguided ways? Muslims? Catholics? Women?
From the original story, it appears that the support for reparative therapy was motivated not by a desire to make it mandatory, but to prevent it from being banned for minors as it has been in other (more "liberal") states.

"(the)Texas Eagle Forum had urged the party to support psychological treatments that seek to turn gay people straight. It comes after Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie last fall signed a law banning such therapies on minors, and California has a similar law."

So, do you think young people who want to change and get away from the gay lifestyle should have access to therapeutic help, or should it be banned? What about people who want to get out of a cult, or out of a religious system such as Islam?
    Rest in peace Muggsy

My 2 centavos: Its all bullsheet. The G doesn't need to be in any of this with any regulation or ?? People need to take care of themselves. If there is a need for "therapy" then there will be providers who provide this service. If people want to go get it then do so. If not then don't. This is a family/individual's matter. Time we leave people to the own success and or their own failures and stop the nannyism mentality. Its out of control. Rant off

Given the differing opinions in this thread, it's unlikely this "plank" will unite the GOP for the next election. The party division continues.

Exactly. Another great example of party division.

It was the Republican Party that decided to politicize the issue by including it in their platform. The repercussions are their own fault.

It is actions like this that make me shake my head at the party leadership.
Accepting Homosexuality had been a part of the Democrat Party platform for years before the republican's decided to adopted family values as a part of their party platform. And what wrong with standing up for the Christian ethics that our country was founded upon? No one is forcing anyone to seek therapy. The republicans are offering the individual a choice.
