how is this coverage going to help me if I shoot a BG? Or are the benefits for the BG? Exactly what am I insuring and how is that different than a homeowners policy? The devil is in the details. "Mandatory" is wrong. However you may want to have insurance if you don't have homeowners or if there's an exclusion in your homeowners.

Gun insurance is never going to benefit anybody harmed by a wrongdoer using a gun. Even if the wrongdoer has insurance, insurance ALWAYS excludes situations where the "insured" is committing a crime.
