If these 300 pages of rules are so great, why are they kept secret?

That corporatism is a result of government having too much influence over free markets. You see, companies cannot screw free people on their own. The market is too big and powerful if left alone. Now, if the government steps in and regulates the market, that can be exploited! Those corporatists you abhor use the government you love to manipulate markets. And the irony is you want to give them more power.

Take the power away from the government and there is no one for corporatists to corrupt. You cannot corrupt the entire market. But give the government undue influence, and you can corrupt that.

Dear lord i hope you can find it within yourself to understand what i'm saying. But i suspect you'll just call me an uneducated hick or something.

Ok then, SO much opposition to government on KahrTalk. SO much.

                More accurate?

I spent the day at a Defensive Handgun training class and a local gun show - good times. My CM45 kicked butt and did everything I asked it to without a single mishap through 100 rounds in multiple scenarios. At the show, .223, especially 855 went fast but AR prices are holding steady for now. Good luck getting 855. Steel jacketed Wolf 5.56/.223 was cheap but few indoor ranges permit it these days. Kahrs of all type were moving and there seemed to be a lot of praise of the company's designs and its future with the new trigger design (I hate it, but I guess that's just me). It's delightful to see affordable .22LR coming back around, and I picked up a bunch of mini-mag that my kiddo's 10/22 loves. Oh, and I found a super-sweet Kershaw Nakamura to follow me home, and a guy who wants to build me a lightweight AR for my Italian Beretta 92 inox... Anyway...

It sounds to me like nearly all of the opposition here hinges on a fundamental mistrust (if not outright prejudice) against governmental control, and not of the specific merits of Net Neutrality. And again the devil will be in the details of a bill still moving its way through the processes described in the link above so it's a fluidic subject at the moment. And surprisingly I heard that Comcast now says they like the bill, and if that's true, it's probably so watered down to be useless. But we'll have to wait a few days or weeks to see, and the telecom providers are already threatening litigation, so this topic won't be resolved soon.

So, my apologies for sounding condescending, but please recall how you feel when you likely understand something at a greater level than your debater, yet he still fails to do his research, resting instead on prejudice and old saws. That's how I feel when these hard-right retorts are barely more finessed than "gubment always bad, commerce always good." It's exasperating when blame for corporatist, monopolistic abuse is even set to the feet of government! How, well, insane. Nice try though. War is peace, love is hate and all that jazz. That's like blaming a gun for killing someone and not the actor behind it, but I digress.

Therefore, if the merits of Net Neutrality are un-debatable here due to a side refusing to unemotionally consider the often complex interplay of government and commerce, then it sounds like we're going to have to prove that there's ANY value of governmental involvement/regulation. That's probably worth a thread all its own, and I'm sure it'll be a lively one, but to be honest I'm debating whether the exercise/practice will be worth our collective time.

Am I underestimating the appetite of KahrTalk's membership for a substantive and logical debate? Or would it just be better to let sleeping dogs lie and folks to retain their universal prejudice against government? Will it be worth laying out how consumer product safety regulations keep our families safer from shoddy overseas goods? Will there be any level of agreement that AC electrical standards and building codes and DOT certification and FAA TSOs and clean water and air acts and chemical spill penalties and medical drug and device certifications serve any purpose at all? Or are we simply That. Far. Apart. from our starting points?

I am for net neutrality. I am a system engineer and understand it as well. I mistrust the government on some things but on this, we are left with the lesser of two evils. If it is between Comcast and government, I will take my chances with government.

                    • ^^^ thanks for coming to Scott's defense there Nytcrawler. It's not really Scott we've been arguing...rather his position. Although he's been pretty disrespectful throughout.

No biggie. That's freedom. Take the good with the bad.

                      • This is Friedman's "This is a Football" speach in the spirit of Vince Lombardi. I've posted it before. But maybe there's hope that you may understand. It's not about mistrusting Government. It's about trusting the free market system that has made this the greatest country in the world.

I will agree that from personal experience Comcast in the middle Tennessee area is the worst. Had dealings with them while aiding an ailing relative. So i get the frustration. I just don't trust the government to deal with it any better.

Scott, I read your part about Appalachia in the 70's and 80's and possibly some of your mistrust of industry comes from what the coal companies did which in many cases was terrible. I don't believe the Internet is the equivalent of some coal companies destroying the land or causing the deaths of people due to negligence. That being said I bet some of those coal companies had politicians in their pocket too.

                            • Scott, mistrust of the G here? really? Where did you ever get that idea?

Glad the pistola ran good for ya.

However, the big question we keep posing here to you so we can bring you into the fold and baptize you into the flock is this, "please with a cherry on top, cite 5 examples where the G got involved in something and it ultimately got better and stayed that way"
