  • Oregon Militia takes over Federal building in Oregon after protest

An armed Militia has taken over the Federal Wildlife building in Oregon, to protest the harsh sentence given out to ranchers for burning some Federal property to protect their land from wildfires and invasive species of plants. No harm was done, the fires were controlled. The Feds are just mad that ranchers burned some park property.

    Tman:

Even though the charges brought on these guys are confusing and concerning with "poaching" tossed in as an afterthought, doesn't the double jeopardy provision come to play here?

How can they be sentenced twice for the same offense?

I think you will be hearing from militias more and more in the future. However, this case doesn't pass the smell test given limited information on the link. Need more background.

What I read online was that they got in trouble for controlled burns on land they lease for grazing rights. If that is in fact true it sounds like more Fed land grabbing BS to me.

Perhaps the ranchers should have held up signs and yelled, "we be burnin' this B*tch down", prior to lighting the fire.

They are trespassing in a Federal building and on Federal controlled property.

There are other options for voicing their objections.

If they end up shot/imprisoned they have received what they asked for!
"Do as I say not as I do"
                "You can't fix stupid"
"Do what you want, 'cause you will any way"

Agreed. There is a time to fight tyranny. Not sure this was one of them. However, isn't a peaceful demonstration an option?

Not saying they're right, but nearly all property out west is Federal controlled property

While I don't approve of trespassing, federal property is out of control. Its been taken to prevent the people from being able to use it without permission from their rulers. which is what is driving this problem. Anyway, federal property is supposed to be public property, it doesn't belong to the bureaucrats who act like its theirs. Holding a protest there without permission is wrong, but less egregious in my mind than holding one in a private shopping mall.

You have the right to peacefully assemble and to petition the government for redress of grievances. You do not have a right to break the law while doing so.

Plus, the threats of violence are creepy. I don't like any of it, just trying to put it in perspective.

Well it seem to be OK if it is Occupy Wall Street. Was anybody charged there.
