I only carry .40 in the Federal expanding FMJ. They look just like a regular FMJ but they have a small piece of rubber inside the tip(not visible like Critical Defense) that causes the round to mushroom on impact. They work very well(i've tested them alot). The only problem is they are very hard to find on the civilian market. Thats my top choice for .40 carry ammo. f3

When I carried .40 I liked the Remington 180g Golden Saber, definitely a hard hitting round.

and yes to toot my own horn I have some for sale on this forum. I am willing to start breaking this lot up and shipping.

Whatever is locally available - I prefer to buy my defensive ammo off the shelf.

Currently it's 180 grain Speer Gold Dots for the .40.

Just a thought for ammo "homebrewers": re the Fed HPs and others with rubber in the hole,
part of the reason claimed is to keep cloth from jamming the HP.
Wonder if silicone rubber sealant from the garage would improve or ruin regular HPs?

i use whatever feeds and cycles perfectly. there was a sale on gold dots so i got one box and cycled them. they worked good, so i bought a small lot of them. ballistic tests were pretty good. i thought about cross shopping different bullets based upon whether they got n amount of expansion versus n+.01 expansion and such, but IMO i just got what works and trained to shoot instead of shop. just hopefully we never have to find out any of us were right.

disclaimer: not an expert, just my two cents.

I think HST, PDX1, and Hornady Critical Defense are good choices, depending on how they feed in the gun (tested). What is working for me in a PM40 gun that is real particular is Hornady in both XST HP or Critical Defense. Of course, HAP should be great too. I plan to try the PDX1 and HST based on their excellent performance tests and reviews. What definitely doesn't work is Hydra-Shok. The ogive cavity is too large...would be my theory, offering no feed-friendly surface to the barrel ramp.

I currently have 180gr Winchester Rangers in my 40, I used to have Federal's 155gr High Shok load (same load as DHS). I also have some BVAC 180gr JHP's that look just fine. This day and age most any hollow point that feeds will do what it's supposed to. Pick what feeds, and in a weight that you prefer and go with it. Just my 2 cents.

I'm a Gold Dot guy thru and thru. If I wear it, it's probably got Gold Dots in it. I do prefer the lighter 165er's in the 40. And I want to try the Short Barrel stuff if the opportunity ever presents itself.

I have been having serious thoughts of switching to Winchester SXT's after looking at expanded bullets on another thread here. Not sure why I didn't feel the need to switch after going to the Winchester show and tell. They are nasty and look like they would feed better than the Gold Dots although mine feed perfect in everything I shoot.

Kind of ask myself why switch now other than the dept carries Winchester and I'd be tempted to requistion when needed and that would be a sin.

                        Depending on availability:
                        CorBon 135gr
                        Remington Golden Saber 165gr
                        Speer Gold Dot 155gr

Been thinking of trying the Hornaday TAP 155gr

My MK40 (or maybe it's just me) is much more accurate with 155gr than it is with heavier bullets. My current choice is Hornady TAP FPD.
