  • Innertube grip for CM9

I know a number of you have mentioned making grips from bicycle innertubes. I decided to give it a try and share the results. It was remarkably easy and I'm quite pleased with the results.

I used a $6 Schwinn innertube, for a 26-inch tire, 1.75-2.125 width. It took all of about 2 minutes to cut a cross-section of innertube and stretch it over the grip. Amazingly, I got it right the first time. It fits very snugly and really softens the harsh texturing of the CM9's grip.

Nice job. I went with an inner tube grip for a time, but switched to the Hogue slip on grip because the palm swell offered a better purchase on the grip. An inner tube grip is an improvement over the standard cheese grater grip.

      Great job!

Next time, you might even be able to get discarded tubes from a bicycle sales/repair shop.

I put one on my PM9 shortly after I bought it and have found it to be perfect.
I didn't use a Schwinn inner tube, I went with the less expensive Chinese brand from Walmart for less than $5.00.

"cheese grater grip" is the best description I've heard. Dead-on accurate.

I use a 1 3/8" dia. thin wall tube. Flip it inside-out so the seam is inside. 1 3/8" is a tight fit but it will not move, even fits on my XD double stack.

Odd thought. How would the bicycle grip work? The stuff you wrap around the bars on road bikes? Just an off thought.

Flipping inside-out is a good idea. I'll try that.

If handlebar wrap is available in various colors, it would be a good way to add some color to the gun. Somebody more creative than me could probably do something very nice with that.

Handlebar grip can get very pricey.

All they had at my local shops was from $15 to $40.

There are some pictures on the forum somewhere of a Kahr with a similar wrap around grip. It appears to be about an inch wide on the roll and has perforations. Most likely, the product was originally intended for use on tennis rackets and golf clubs. The person posting the picture reported that it is very comfortable. But, it looks like cr@p to me.

Having wrapped road bike handlebars many times, it seems likely that it would be just as difficult (nearly impossible) to achieve an attractive result with handlebar tape (wrap) on a pistol grip. Stick with the ghetto grip inner tubes approach or one of the over priced ($10) commercial slip on grips. At least for your $10 you get a reasonably attractive result.

Yeah, if all you care about is function . . . grab whatever you like. If you want something that complements the aesthetics of your Kahr . . . spend a little money.

It would be so nice if something made sense for a change.

If you want to do your own sandpaper grip run down to Home Depot and buy a 15 ft roll of 3M Step and Ladder Tread Tape for around $21. Cut it to size and you are good to go. Figure I can replace it a good dozen of so times before I need more.

I think the Qwik Grip is my favorite and best looking slip on grip out there. I got tired of the tubes and wraps and went with the wood burner routine.
So far very happy with it.

+1 on the Qwik-Grip and +1 on your stippling, too, Bawanna! (I hate to give you 3rd place, but that is the only trophy they have! It really ought to have a 1 on it.)

I bought some hockey tape. It is cloth and around 3/4" wide. Not as tacky as rubber. I tried doing the whole grip on my TCP, but it is impossible to get it looking right and even. The overlapping layers make it thicker in some spots than others. So, I removed it and then just put one vertical strip on the backsrap to smooth out the grip serrations a bit. I had done so on the backstrap and the front strap of my CM9 awhile back. It is stil there even though I still have the Qwik-Grip on it. I bought a Traction Rubber Grip set, and I want to try it for a thinner profile. It doesn't cover the cheeze graters, though, so the hockey tape would remain.
                            Very interesting...

You can see more of Bawanna's grip stippling pictures here in this post.

The Qwik Grips (size 3 for Glocks or 3a on the Qwik Grip website) that Bawanna mentioned are the grips on the PM40's pictured in my earlier message and available from a variety of suppliers including this catalog entry by Midway.
