  • Lube

Hey Guys....has anyone here used and Frog Lube?

I like the concept....but wanted to see if anyone had used it before I ordered any....if the Seals...must be some good stuff!!

or do I just use some other type of lube?.....

I read where someone was using Syn. Motor oil????.....hummmm....metal to metal....not sure how it would do??

    what are you using?

Just use a tube of "Gun Grease"......Oil?.....

    Thanks,

    Jeff

I've used everything from Amsoil, STP, TW25 gun grease, Rem Oil, Outers Oil, etc. As long as I've kept the important part lubed, I've never seen much difference in what I was using for lube. I don't shoot in extreme climates, so thats not a factor.
Why would you worry about Synthetic Motor oil on Metal to Metal, that exactly what it was designed to lube. Rignt now I'm using TW25 grease on the rails, and Rem Oil on the other lube points.

Normally gun oil is a very low viscosity oil, not a thick oil, I guess Motor oil would be OK . It is a friction reducer and if it works OK in your gun, then I certainly would not be telling u it is not good to use. If u use any lubricant and the gun does not work, normally it is not the lubricants fault but it is a gun issues. I think gun lubricants is about as debateable as buller preferences. We all know and accept that there are other spray cleaners that do the same exact thing as some of the over p;riced advertised Gun spray cleaners, . I would not expect to see on any oil container, be it Amsoil, Mobil One where it would say also good for guns. Certainly we don';t all believe that a company likle Hoppe's forumualtes and makes their own gun oil. This ol timer doesn't. One would really be surpised to see just how many oil related products a big companyt like LUCAS with their label on it does not make.

If it works for you, stay with it..

Any oil you used on long guns will work perfectly fine on a pistol. Many here myself included like the TW25 because it comes in a convenient syringe type applicator and it's quick and easy to apply a line in the slide rails or other places where grease would be preferred.

thetmanski nailed it when he said as long as you get lube in the places were lube is really needed you'll be perfectly fine.

I've never tried the Frog lube but as you say, if the Seals like it and I was looking for a product I'd sure give it a try.

Oh I just reread and saw you were looking for ol timers. I'll give you back to Jocko although I haven't wiped my nose in at least 10 minutes so I'm not a runny nose little kid my own self.

I guess we should formulate more accurate age groups.

Maybe Old, Older and Fossils? I'll never forget my dad's 36th birthday, thought he was the oldest man alive. Looking back how we'd all love to be 36 again. Least ways I would. 26 would be even better but you can't hold back the tide ya know?

i personally wouldn't use motor oil on a gun unless i had to.
i know guys who are using frog lube on their ar's and glocks who like it a lot. i am using eezox myself right now and i like that because it dries. i carry my pm9 daily and don't want a pocket full of oil. from what i have read, the froglube is totally syn safe and it dries too so i will prob switch over to that when i run out of clp for the ar. give us a review if you try some.

I wouldn't use a motor oil on my firearms but I got nothing against using an auto transmission fluid on em.

To be honest sitting here thinking about it a motor oil might be the ticket. I believe it has some stickifiers that keep stuff lubed between runnings, this way the damage done in startup is lessened. HHMM maybe an SAE 30 mixed with auto tranny fluid would be the trick. HHHMM toss in a bit of KROIL for that penetration factor hhmmm.

Anyone know the formula for Ed's Red?

Turns out Ed's Red has Dexron III in it.. I thought so.

I don't know the formula but I'd bet your not far off. I'd thought of half regular and half synthetic mixed, the Kroil would be a nice touch although it might break down the other ingredients. STP or Engine Restore would provide some sticky. Among the multitude of things I'm not, a chemist ranks right near the top.

That link I posted also has the original formula for Hoppes #9.

Oh and Bawanna I wasn't all that far off from Ed's Red as it turns out. His formula uses kerosene and acetone for the penetration effect.

humm, I wonder why we would think mixing a fossil oil in with a pure synthetic is better than a pure synthetic??just askin. fossil oils today are not nearly as good as agood synthetic lubricant..

I didn't mention a synthetic... ATF is a dewaxed fossil oil apparently.

AND apparently a synthetic motor oil all by it lonesome is a good lube.

                              "Synthetic Automotive Oils
Synthetic automotive oils (such as Quaker State High Performance Synthetic, Castrol, and Mobil 1) work well as general lubricants and because of their detergent capabilities they will help to remove "crud." (Synthetic oils handle low temperatures better than regular oils.) Just remember, as with any lubricant, not to over lube things. Valvoline Semi-Synthetic Power Steering Fluid has also been used with great success by many folks as their normal lubricant." quoted from frfrogspad.com
