Reagan was a liberal democrat who became a conservative republican. The transformation didn't come over night. Like most of us he had to become educated. Ronald Reagan was a Life Member of the NRA with an A+ rating from the ILA. I don't happen to believe that most machine guns are used for legitimate sporting purposes, but I also believe that legitimate sporting purposes have nothing to do with the second amendment. Ronald Reagan was one of our greatest conservative presidents. He understood the benefits of a strong military and made ours the strongest military on the face of the earth. Because of his actions half the people of eastern Europe were freed from the tyranny of communist oppression and the Berlin wall came down. There is far more to Ronald Reagan than a single comment. Perhaps you could also use a little more education.

There's a man after my own heart!! Reagan is talking about the root of the problem = fixing the true American magnet for illegal aliens = companies that employ them (and I'll throw in free social benefits too). Fix that and you won't have any illegal aliens to worry about.

Both of these clips leave some context lacking. We don't know exactly what he meant by a military AK47 nor how he is defining an illegal immigrant.

yes you are right about context but throwing the burden of the immigration problem on the businessman is not the fix. News flash....businesspeople have enough to do and worry about already. Solving the immigration problem should not be added to the list of worries and possible fines and punishments that businesspeople already face.IMHO (speaking as if the speech was given today)

Am I missing something? What burden? Don't hire illegals is a burden?

Illegals come here for work and for free social benefits. Take those away from illegals and encourage them for legals and the problem fixes itself. No?

              1. I heard Reagan say machine gun, so I believe he was talking full auto weapons.
              2. ISTR, Reagan provided "amnesty" to several million illegal aliens. According to the agreements, this was supposed to be followed up by legislation for better border control, which did not happen and the rift between dems and reps has widened considerably since/because of that failure.
When Reagan provided that "amnesty", the world did not end. I do not see a problem with doing that again except the next time it MUST include concurrent or prior legislation to close the barn door.
However, I do not see that happening because the current atmosphere in Washington is NO COMPROMISES. The far right will not discuss amnesty, the far left will not discuss closing the border. A simple compromise will never happen.

seems simple but it seldom is.... if you owned or own a small business that hires employees, your question would be rhetorical. Aside from making sure your prospective employee is not a thief, drug addicted, has references that check out, and is responsible as well as capable, now we have to worry about their citizenship? And if an employer makes a mistake, what then? More potential fines and financial burdens that already are choking off business(esp in Kali)? Makes owning a business less and less appealing. As a businessman, I shouldn't have to be a border patrol agent also. What's next? I already am responsible for employee healthcare, their taxes, plus any liability the employee brings to my business...now I am watchdog for illegals too? No thanks amigo.

Thank you for asking. I used Reagan because many here would consider him the gold standard to measure future POTUS, The man is dead, but what I am trying to illuminate is that over 30 years later, we are still working on the same issues, and that both political parties seems to talk out of both sides of their mouths. What is favorable to one party seems to be contra 30 years later and visa versa. While there are some fundamental differences between the parties, the differences seems to be lessening more and more. Same coin, two different sides. While I am fundamentally happy that we (conservatives)regained both houses, I am not sure how effective the ultimate change will be in the end.

Now there's a burden. Border patrols trying to keep illegals from coming over here to get illegal work. In Ohio you already have to verify citizenship before completing a new hire. And there are penalties for failure to do so. Is it different in Calif?

Good point. Reagan was a great Conservative and it will be hard to convince me otherwise. Better than that...he was a common sense Conservative with a knack for seeing the root causes of our social ills not just the results. And that's what we're discussing here (I hope).

I have a good friend who was on Reagans security detail when he was Governor of California. That's strange huh, a conservative republican in office in California.
He loved that man dearly and says all the time Reagan made him a republican.

Nancy not so much love there. I think he used the word witch. Not uncommon really. Usually the spouse of the person in office is the less loved one.

Knkali, you seem to have a penchant for stirring the pot. You post things without comment just to start a controversy. Reagan wasn't perfect, but he's far closer to perfect that the lying socialist s.o.b. who currently occupies the White House. Why don't you just give it a rest. You wouldn't want to wear out your welcome.

This right here. Funny thing, that little white speck on top of chicken sh!t........that's chicken sh!t too.

The future will certainly be brighter the moment our current white house occupant leaves. We're at the bottom of the barrel, can't get no darker than it is.
