Don't say hippo tooth on this forum ever again. No way, no how. The finished product on those was beautiful but getting there was a nightmare from hell. I may someday if I live long enough touch slabbed ivory maybe? Raw horn or tooth is just to beyond my tools and knowledge. I learned a ton about it and bad as it was it was a good experience. I'm trying to remove it from my memory banks.Originally posted by quikduk View PostGot it. My bobtail is a little more extreme and I have done some additional radiusing. I have been browsing this thread and like way too many of your options. I would even entertain modifying a set that you haven't sold yet. I like the hippo tooth (teeth?) as well as the buckeye burl, really figured woods etc.
I am refinishing the frame in satin silver with the slide and all controls, bobtail, beavertail etc. in satin black. I will use stainless hex screws for the grips.
Post some of your remaining grips or ideas and I'll hopefully make a decision. Oh, I was also thinking about the half checkering and a thumb safety finger groove like on the (GASP!) VZ grips. Nothing overstated or too wide.
Sadly I can't get the buckeye burl from the guy I usually use who has consistently provided good stabilized wood. I might be able to find a chunk on ebay or something or perhaps if your browsing you could too. My guy sometimes has dyed Box Elder Burl that resembles buckeye pretty close too.
I've not sure what you mean on thumb safety finger groove. I've done mag release recess's. We'll have to figure that out.http://bawanna45.wix.com/bawannas-grip-emporium#!

Bawanna you are correct. I was not thinking clearly as my post was near 1700hrs.
I "meant" to say "magazine release thumb relief" or something like that.
Burl, Rosewood, darker stained Bubinga and Pau Ferro, or whatever.
If you have some stabilized blanks, let me know what variety, color and figuring they have and I'll pick one.
I have an idea of what I am looking for so I may email you some pictures for reference.
Other than that, I hope you are doing well. My back is getting better daily...that is if I can keep from screwing it up again...

I have this Box Elder Burl Brown/Black.

About the only piece I have enough to do grips in the stabilized stuff but can get more.
This is Box Elder Burl Green/Black

It sometimes has more of the blonde running thru it and look much like Buckeye Burl. Only have enough for one side on that.
We can get more. The guy sometimes takes a while but he does good stuff. I've been waiting for a piece for nimbidos (I'm sure I messed that spelling up) for a couple weeks.
Wish I had money to order larger quantities. Also have some wood I'd like to cut into suitable pieces and send to him to work his magic on.http://bawanna45.wix.com/bawannas-grip-emporium#!

I'll keep waiting and looking. I like the figuring on both but the color isn't what I was looking for. I do like the deep variations in Cocobolo and in the Burls. Can the color be dyed/stained into the wood once it has been stabilized or does this have to happen first?
My first color choice is the black/gray or blue/gray.
My second color choice is in the figured Koa, Cocobolo, Pau Ferro etc.

It's dyed as it's stabilized. Once stabilized it's pretty impervious to everything. I just polish it with a polishing wheel.
Grotman, the Black Ash Burl isn't my favorite either but it looks 100% better in person than in the pictures. I just can't get it to show up right.http://bawanna45.wix.com/bawannas-grip-emporium#!

Hope you know, no reflection on you or your work. Just not my "style". Really do love the Franquette Walnut grips though. Someday hope to have something that I can put some grips like that on and you will be the first one I call..

For sure. That's a good idea. I think my guy cuts this stuff and if he ends up with a bit extra he just sends it.
Some times I get enough to get to grip sets. Not usually.
I have a couple other single slabs left I think also.
I'll add that to the to do list. I think they would look super.http://bawanna45.wix.com/bawannas-grip-emporium#!
