  • It's not always a happy story.
I had one little old lady come in with 5 or 6 old dirty nasty military type rifles. Dirty but sound and a fun project every single one.
Usually the test is to point out somebody and ask if she'd give them to him or her. If they say yes then that supposedly alleviated the idea that she's giving them to us because we're police. She specifically said she wanted me to have them since I got all excited seeing them. Higher up happened to come by and vetoed the whole deal.
I tried to get her to take them to a shop and get at least a little something for them, she had been to one and said they didn't want them.

She ended up turning them in and I'm sure they all got melted down into manhole covers.

I've since tried to get the front desk people to get me before they bring anything inside. That way I can go out and explain the dilemma involved. I absolutely hate to see guns especially guns with history destroyed. I've saved a bunch here over the years.
Doesn't happen very often really. Dad dies and mom doesn't want the guns in the house. Usually old stuff not worth much.
Figure the widow could usually use the money anyhow and try to not let shops rip them off either.

There are many times I've avoided range trips because $35 could be better spent on other things, but it's not too often that $10 is a hardship. The problem is, blowing a minimum of $250-350 for a .22LR pistol would pay for well over a thousand rounds of 9mm. At some point, there's a break even. I ain't no math whiz, but if I've figured it right, spending let's say $300 for the gun and saving $25 per range visit, it takes 12 range visits of 100 rounds of .22 to break even. After that, I have a dirt cheap pistol that'll keep me somewhat in practice any time the mood strikes me.

        When's Kahr gonna make a K22?
Here in Utah, I can buy 9mm for $9.99 a box of 50 and usually a box of 100 CCI mini mag for the same price so cost for me is exactly half per round of 22. The real question is, is 9mm twice the fun to plink with? I think so which is why I don't buy 22 much anymore.

        • The good old days....
When I was a kid, Western Auto used to run .22LR sales, two boxes of Remington for $1.00. I think regular price was .59 per box or some such. I used to pick up drink bottles and turn them in for .02 ea. Have to pick up 50 bottles for a hundred rounds. Worth it. I don't remember when all the age restrictions kicked in, but I bought my Marlin Model 60 on layaway at the same Western Auto, I was in junior high, my cousin was married to the manager, don't know if that was a factor or not (still have it, stock is pretty beat up). Used to pay about 2.00 per week on it. Don't even remember what the price was.

A 9mm carbine comes in handy once you start plinking out past 50yds. .....

...but it's been my experience that you get more bounces out of shotgun hulls with a .22 than you do with a 9

I miss the Western Auto stores.

            • Love the carbine idea. I am really eyeballing a .40 mech tech carbine for my Glock.

                • Hickock45 just did a video on the SW22 Victory, he really likes it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHpiVLjawgg

I went to check out some various .22s at the store yesterday. In the used case they had a Colt Woodsman, which was one monster pistol. But $1200 was a little out of my price range.

Most of the "modern" .22s felt like cheap hollow plastic with aluminum slides, like cap guns or airsoft. Meh.

I ended up putting one on layaway that I pretty much pre-selected before I went in. They had a used Bersa Thunder 22 at a good price. It felt good and solid, I like DA/SA, so I nabbed it.

                    • I have to stop reading this thread. Too many pictures generating a desire to buy something.
The only thing better than having all the guns and ammo you'd ever need would be being able to shoot it all off the back porch.

That's a beauty! I've read that the early .22lr Bersa and 70 series Beretta mags were close enough to work in each other.
Judging by today's left wing, looks like Senator Joe McCarthy was right after all.

                        • Big thanks and commendation to Greg. I've lost two attempts at scoring a bolt dustcover for my little Mossberg.
Both based on information that he provided.
He came through with a third that had a buy it now button. This one didn't get away! It's a simple, unneeded little part but something I've wanted and been searching for off and on since I got the rifle several years ago.

I'll post a picture of it installed when it arrives.

It's the 5th rifle from the left, actually 5th rifle from the right too. I guess that makes it officially dead center.

Lets seem some more plinkers. This is a great thread.

                          • ^^^^ You almost have enough there to build a picket fence. Which reminds me of the long picket fence made of Civil War musket barrels with bayonets attached that surrounded an old Victorian mansion estate overlooking the Mississippi next to Jefferson Barracks south of St. Louis. Supposedly the place was built to entice retiring President Useless S. Grant to move there, but of course that didn't happen. Anyways, the old manse was pretty run down with a couple of poor families living in it when we were at the old deactivated post in 1954-57.

The unique fence of course had deteriorated too, with most of the bayonet blades broken off by vandals over the decades. Later heard it was all demolished, and I wonder what happened to the remainder of that fence. It probably enclosed a 5 acre estate with the barrels spaced maybe less than a foot apart, so you can imagine how many surplus muskets were used to make it. Wouldn't be surprised if some of them weren't captured or surrendered Confederate hardware.

Enough ramblin', so here's a Hi-Standard Model 101 Duramatic I traded off towards a new Ruger Super Blackhawk late last fall. Had bought it new maybe 40 years ago and shot it very little:

                            • Three types of ammo today, it didn't like any of them. CCI had the least failures to extract, 2 out of 18.

                              • [QUOTE=gb6491;370971]Bawanna,
That's an older Kimber conversion. I think is pretty much like their current one except for the finish.

The Glock conversion is an Advantage Arms unit. I think most conversions can be ammo sensitive, find the right ammo and you'll be happy. That can probably said for .22 rimfires in general. Almost every one I own has a preference in ammo; some are more reliable with one brand, some are more accurate with a particular brand.

The only regret you will have about buying a CZ75 is that you didn't do it sooner The Kadet kit is, IMO, one of the best conversions out there. Works well and is all steel.
Did you know there was a variant (CZ 40B) that had a grip angle like the 1911?
